The guy we hired had no prior criminal record, or any drug or alcohol history either. And certainly no ankle bracelet!  He was arrested, and pled guilty to dealing in stolen property, a felony. He said a guy owed him some money, and gave him an expensive ceiling fan for the money he owed him. He tried to return the brand new ceiling fan to the store it was sold from, and was arrested!

He was sentenced to 1 year in the county jail, and eligible for work release.

Felons are all over the place, they cut your grass, paint your home, fix your car, and prepare and serve your food.

I recently found out that most car washes here in Tampa use work release prisoners, and Taco Bell turns the other way about arrests, unless they are violent.

Chris, I wasn't saying NOT to do this, just sharing information to be aware of so he can do any due diligence he felt necessary prior to bringing a work release person onto a jobsite.  All of the examples I gave were pulled from a single post of things that happened in Portsmouth, VA over about a 3 year period and they gave some other random information from other work release programs and how they were run.

And that guy that got arrested for the stolen fan...wow, just wow.  Talk about catching someone in the court system on a bad day.  Most people would be far to intelligent to steal a fan from a store and try to return it for money to that exact same store, so you would think the judge would have been a lot more lenient and just given community service or 1 year suspended sentence...especially since he had no prior criminal record or drug/alcohol abuse in his history.  That was just harsh.

Hi Chuck,

Sorry to hear about your son's injury and I pray for his speedy recovery. I have a friend who snapped his leg in three places when his ladder kicked out. This happened two years ago and he still is in pain with the screws in his leg. Ladder safety is a critical part of our business and has been discussed in the past on this forum. Some of the key points I would like to share with everyone are:

1. Use a ladder stabilizer

2. The angle of the ladder is critical- GET IT RIGHT!

3. Anchor the base if possible- hammer a crow bar into the ground around the last rung.

4. Avoid placing a ladder on a blacktop driveway (if possible).

5. Extend the ladder over three feet past the roof surface to help with safe entry and exits.

Any other key points?
