Two days ago I bid on a tile roof cleaning in Windermere, Florida 5313 living area, 6851 sq. ft. total living area, 2 story. My bid $660.00 When I followed up with an e-mail she said that she went with a company that outbid my price more than $200.00 What do you all think of that?

I think Florida roof cleaning prices are terrible.
Yes, they absolutely are. Lowballers and pressure washers cleaning roofs at half of softwashing prices are all over FL. Stick to your prices Robert. Don't sell your services for nothing. $450 for 6850sqft is only $0.065/sqft. There's no money to be made at that price. You don't want the kind of customers that choose a low price over quality of work anyway.
Robert I run into it all the time in se fl , I loose quite a few jobs too , you were there first , you should have prepared them for the low ballers , trunk slammers , untrained , unlicenced , uninsured , total wrong way to clean the roof , per the roof mfg in most all cases , all of these things and more , so when they get a cheaper price , they allready heard it from you and it gives them somthing to think about , was the cheaper price high pressure , if so they should allready know that is not the way to go , you still loose a few , but I think it helps Dabber
Was the roof actually 6851 sq. ft. ? If your total area of living space was 6851 sq. ft. on a 2 story residence does that mean that the roof was 1/2 of that amount ?

This is THE Stupidest thing to do, to take a 6000sq ft home, and cut the square footage in 1/2 "because it is a 2 story"!
A fall from 2 stories up is quite certainly gonna be fatal, or paralyzing at best. What is your life worth ?
Even if you "shoot it from a ladder" it is no fun moving a 40 ft ladder all over the place, and if you fall off the ladder, welcome to a casket, or a wheelchair.
That tile roof here in Tampa would have been about 1000.00 dollars, maybe 800.00 if someone were desperate.
I used to think that saying half the square footage was the way to go on a 2 story roof but you also have to consider the pitch of the roof takes up more square footage to reach the same distance as the flat floor would take inside the house. That adds area that is not calculated in the square footage of the home.
As far as fair pricing goes.... I have been a member of Thumbtack.com for a few years now and if you want to see low ballers go ahead and join them. They send you leads that you bid up against other pros by paying a 4.99 fee up front to have email contact with the customer. They produce a lot of leads but the customers are tire kickers and people looking for lowest price possible. Thumbtack verifies its pros with license and insurance as well as provides info about the pros like reviews and such. Still getting outbid at record setting pace. Where have all the good customers gone to??? Its places like this....
Theres no way i touch that roof for under $1500, in fact I would probably be upwards of $2000. if it was surrounded by concrete and had no landscaping concerns. You have to set the customer up properly and explain why you charge X and your competition charges Y. I tell every potential customer of mine that is price shopping that I am absolutely the most expensive person in town and I explain why. I get every job doing this. People just want to feel that they are getting the full value for their money.
I agree with Mike, sooner or later this guy will get hurt or will be out of Business. There are always going to be low Ballers. I have seen this in other trades; the harm will only come if you react to them. The harm will be to you and your company.
I would bid that roof somewhere between $1000.00 and $1500.00. I miss a lot of them at that price, but I make my profit margin on the ones I get. I usually end up buying some used equipment from the guys that charge less.
Back to my original comment. I think that I may have asked that question wrong.I did not mean to price by 1/2 square foot of a two story house. Most of the roofs around here are fiberglass and when I price my roofs I calculate the total square footage of the roof with the pitch factored in giving me the total amount of squares to price. I use different multipliers for one story , two story , tile , etc. I also add for complex landscaping and areas where access may be more difficult. Some of the roofs on the larger houses around here are 1 1/2 story and parts extend low enough to be shot from a short ladder.
I agree with the high pricing of our business due to the danger we may incur on each and every job.....

Truck Drivers get more to haul a dangerous load that might shift or blow up on them, so why should us roof cleaners not be compensated for a possible fall to our death ?
