We clean roofs and gutters. I got a blocked call today (a big red flag) from a very nice lady. I was suspicious about the blocked call, but when she told me where she lived, I can understand it!
She lives in The Reserve At Tampa Palms, a very exclusive area. He house was 5500 sq ft, but it is an English Tudor, with a 10/12 pitch 2 story roof, and right under a tree canopy!
She wanted her gutters/downspouts cleaned, but this would have required working off a 40 ft ladder, and dodging tree limbs, in the process!
I was very nice, and so was she, and told her we are not interested in this gutter cleaning job! Gutter Cleaning, like Pressure Washing here in Tampa has been ruined by unlicensed, uninsured Hacks, who work cheap.
She had gutter cleaning estimates for her house from 150 to 250.00 (none actually even looked at the house).
There are times to Walk. I have walked away from jobs many times. One homeowner last year wanted to write his own contract. I told him sorry I can't help you, and off I went.

I hear ya Art! We are busy enough cleaning roofs in Tampa that we do not have to take just any job. Safety of our employees are my first concern. No way are we working off 40 ft ladders, and digging out gutters by hand while dodging tree limbs, for any customer who wants to be cheap.
If anyone ever calls me with copper gutters again I can assure you I will walk away.
LOL Marcus! This customer may have had Copper Gutters, but fortunately, it never got that far!
These kinds of things happen to us all the time.
Customers shop the uninsured, unlicensed, and inexperienced beginners and hacks, then, call us, and expect us to "compete" with some Hack or Beginner, who seriously underbid their gutter or roof cleaning cleaning job

now that is pure truth!!!! Lately I've said to a few customers that our competitors who we actually consider competitors are actually insured.. on all fronts, business and employee... if they want someone to show up for $100 bucks, then they dont want a legitimate company...
on a side note.. there's a living social deal going on up here right now.. $89 for a 1 story house clean, $99 dollars for a 2 story lol... this is a complete joke because living social takes 50% of those amounts, and the contractor gets the other 50%... so they are going to clean houses for $50 lol... wtf????? last I looked they sold over 200 or so of them.. so thats about $10000 for 200 homes to be cleaned.. F-Ck THAT.

We do not let those claiming to be "fully insured" get away with lying about being Insured. We use Joe Walters Insurance Agency, and they will gladly email a copy of our Million Dollar Roof Cleaning Liability Policy to potential customers!
You will not BELIEVE how many so called "competitors" this tactic weeds out! It got rid of one little cut throat "roof cleaning company", who was blowing people out with claims of being "fully insured with workers comp"
It turned out, he could not even produce any proof of liability insurance, much less workers comp!
How do you price a job like that? Having to use a 40 or 50 foot ladder, top and bottom it and stuff. Takes forever. I charge extra, but I don't keep those customers.

You don't! You simply and nicely walk away. Once this customer started talking she had Craigslist bids from 150 to 250.00 for THAT size and dangerous house, under trees, with gutters all around, it was time to WALK
We were a no-bid on a good size roof cleaning job 2 weeks ago - the liability was just way too high and we're going to no-bid a shopping center roof that I looked at last week - turns out it's cedar and we're done with cedar. Some things just aren't worth the hassle.

After awhile, you develop a "sense" about potential jobs, and learn when to no bid something.
One reason why I am not fond of commercial roof cleaning jobs is down here, they will shop you to death, or have already chosen who will clean their roof! Your Bid is simply to "keep their chosen son honest".
It is also not uncommon for Painters down here to "throw in the roof cleaning" to get the painting job!
We do very very little commercial roof cleaning, by choice! Apple Roof Cleaning is built on doing high end residential customers (rich people in big houses), who will have money in good times, and bad times.
