"We don’t use mortar or glaze removing muriatic acid on your roof, or just spray Chlorine on it either. Strong Chlorine and Sodium Hydroxide solutions have been known to actually strip the glaze from your tiles"...What does RCIA recommend me using? Or are you saying that I should use a Sodium Hydrochlorite? Hmmmm...confusing please explain
You are so full of it Smitty. What is your back ground that makes you such an expert? I have been cleaning tile roofs for 19 years and have never stripped the glaze from tiles. I am even referred to tile roof home owners by the makers of the tiles on their roofs.
High pressure washing will strip the glaze from the tiles.
That's exactly what you are to use smitty. A chlorine and soap solution. Now you don't have to be confused. Chris t has been doing this for over 20 yrs and I don't think he would keep using a solution that would ruin the tile.
Actually, the only thing I use is SH and TSP...I've just been doing some research on what is proper according to the tile manufacturers (this is our primary roofing here in sunny Florida) however, I have come across a lot of contradictions in what the company is advertising they use and what they actually use! Clarification is all I needed. Thank you.

These are actual posts I am finding out here and would like to respond to the HOME OWNER when asked about it. They are the whole reason I have been cleaning roofs people! I do not wish to hide what is used. I wish to explain how, what, and why it is used. Especially from the Certified Roof Cleaners in the same state I am in. Sodium Hypochlorite (SH) is, by the EPA, known as chlorine. I cannot lie to a customer-I will give them the choices of what I am using and what the others are using-Let them make the choice, but an informed one not a hidden-behind-word play one.

Well, I have been cleaning roofs for nearly 20yrs. I actually picked up my first pc wand when I was just a young punk, and have since learned by the school of hands on work that pressure is NO GOOD FOR A ROOF! Now, I have never stripped glaze from tile roofs but, I have sealed many of roofs where the glaze has been stripped-make a lot of money from someone else's careless cleaning of a tile roof! I do not use high pressure either to clean tile roofs-that will damage the poop out of a tile roof-I have my own non-pressure wand that I made myself that reduces run-off. I was not trying to be a smart azz but home owners are finding all this information on the internet and I would like to be able to explain just what it is that I use -vs- what the other guys use. Period dot.

Welcome Smitty, I see you made it over here, to this Forum.
TSP is an awesome cleaner, but you have to be careful! Some Tile Roofs are painted, and the TSP can dull the paint!

Thanks Chris! I'm not as savvy on the computer as I am on the roof but I finally figured it out...thanks for the heads up on dulling the paint too! What other product would you recommend that won't dull the roof, Chris? I've heard of the Gain but what I'm understanding is that it is merely to mask the smell of hte SH. I'd appreciate any help you can give me here, Chris as I respect your knowledge, and value your opinion.

Well Smitty, it seems that using additives to the mix is kind of like asking what kind of deoderant you use, everyone has their opinions!
NOTHING equals TSP (or even comes close), as far as sheer cleaning power goes. For a Bare Cement Flat or Barrel Tile roof, it is the chit.
Do NOT use TSP on Clay Tile or painted tiles, but other then that, you are good to go with it.
I do not like ANY surfactants (not including TSP) on glazed tile roof (makes them too slippery)!
But, on Clay or Cement Tile Roofs, it is not as much of a problem.
Gain is a powerful soap (surfactant), as well as a chlorine masking agent, at higher concentrations.

It depends Smitty. I am single, and if I am by myself, I use deoderant. But, if I am going to meet with a girl, I NEVER Ever use any deoderant, or anything with a smell in it.
Here is why. It will mask the Phermones, that could possibly have attracted a girl to you w/o her knowledge, or yours either.
Very Strong? What % SH are you getting down there. We can get only 10 or 13% in Houston Texas.
We only get 12.5 percent, but there is a world of difference between FRESH 12.5 percent, or OLD 12.5 percent.
Plus, we not only get it fresh, but we get it from a place that almost always runs their tanks down to nearly empty, so the FRESH SH is not compromised by adding it to OLD SH in the tanks.
Florida is the land of swimming pools, and when it rains, the SH in a pool is diluted, so people need more of it, and keep the SH here pretty fresh.
Smitty I also live and clean in south Fl , do alot of tile roofs , I also have nothing to hide from the coustomers and have no problem explaining to them exactly whats in it and why its better, I explain to them, the solution has 5 chemicals in it , that the bulk of the cleanning and killing of the stains is done with the bleach in the mix #1 then you have water #2 you have a very strong cleanning agent , by itself is encredibly powerful which is TSP #3 we also have a cling agent which helps hold the solution on the roof etc #4 (Gain) and we have a cleanning booster as well as a bioside which helps the roof stay clean longer #5 (borax) I also explain to them that if the roof has instant results they are using bleach , the so called green cleanners take months to work I also tell them to do some research themselves , if they want and they will see what we are saying is what the roof mfgs also say, PS I have never damaged the glaze on tile roofs using this system, boy does high pressure remove the glaze though , good luck Dabber
Roof snot clings better than straight gain, pick your cover up in the gain or add lemonade from Russ works well, we need to have a fall season sale for 5/1 gl combo
