I suggested Art because the guy wanting to learn is a remodeling and siding contractor, like Art.
I thought they might have something in common, and were far enough away from each other to not be a problem.
The guy is TRYING to learn, he just sent me this.
Apple Roof Cleaning,

Chris you know better then any of us. He needs to do his reseach so he understands whats going on with the proccess of roof cleaning. Coming to our job and asking a million dum question isn't going to help. Let him get his post count up and I'm sure we can all help him along the way. Until then don't wast our time.

Give the guy my number. If he doesn't mind traveling to the Poconos I'll be happy to help him get his feet wet.
Hank

And the list begins!
I guess that's just hank being a nice guy. I used to one once too!
Long time ago!Now Homey don't play dat no more!
LOL!
Chuck,
When I was much younger I was uptight all the time and not the most pleasant person to deal with. Now that old age has set in I can appreciate things more and help others or as you put it "be a nice guy".
Hank
How old are you Hank? I'm almost 65. I have learned not to be the nice guy, when it comes to making a living. There's a time to just do business too. I assume where you are at, you have no clue what it's like to have the outrageous amount of competition we have here in Florida!
Not just roof cleaners. Most of the lawn / landscape businesses do it and have it written down the length of their 20' trailers. Off dudy firemen and school teachers do it for side cash. Now, I noticed roofing companies advertising "Have a real roofing company clean your roof!" My guess is it's just to get them up on your roof, so they can see people roof jobs! Anyway, you are helping someone who is not direct competition and that's not so hard.
It's not what RCIA was made for though. It's a roof cleaning institute of instruction. Taking newbees on the job for us, would make RCIA much less needed.
You are still a nice guy!
What's that expression? Nice guys finish L--- {What's that expression? LOL

this is bad precedent. nothing personal, but if somebody started up in my area, and a fellow RCIA member took him under his wing the way Hank is doing, I'd be pretty pissed.
nothing personal against my man Hank, he's a good guy, but it's an issue that I think we should take a serious look at. i mean say somebody from one of your territories just signed up here and i offered to train him. how would that go over?
i understand this guy is from CT, so it might not be applicable in this particular instance since i don't believe he's in a member's area, but why should he get preferential treatment, right as the season is starting? This just doesn't sit will with me, and has nothing to do with Hank or this guy, I just think it's a bad precedent and I'd have a serious problem if this happened in my territory, safe to say most, if not all of us would.
When I joined in 08 I read till all hours of the night. I didn't ask one question till a year later and went slow to see if I would like the roof cleaning industry. I then built a rig and went to family first and clean all their roofs for free. It was 2 years before I got paid to clean a roof. I got on the phone a called a few roof cleaning guys and Bill Booz was more then happy to train me. He pick a day that he was not to busy and I met him. We both came to a agreement that he would be paid for training me. It was only fair as I slowed him down and ask some dumb questions. So what I am trying to say is that you have to spend some time reading and participating in the forum so people can get to know who they are dealing with.
I say we string Hank up. Oh, wait a minute that's me(LOL). You mean nobody got him yet? LOL
Like others I did tons of reading before I had the balls to ask a question or even post a picture. This guy is not in a member's market(CT) and that is one of the reasons I offered to help the guy. Like Mike from Premier mentioned it would be and is an issue if he was in a member's market. Someone is there, perhaps the next RCIA member, or the next to step away because of this kind of "Instant Roof Cleaner" help?
This is only my opinion(yes I know the old saying) but we need to extend ourselves to new members in an effort to grow our association, I nicely disagree 100%. RCIA is here and will be, we answer premium member questions. Even then we don't throw RCIA out and take over with a quickie "here ya go" training-That's my opinion! LOL which will only help us in the long run. I don't think it will. I remember something I learned long ago - it's ok to just say "I WAS WRONG ABOUT THAT" You don't have to defend your decision to the bitter end. I've been wrong at least as often as I've been right, which is the natural order of things, I think?
When I joined back in 2008 this place was hopping with info, promotional posts, fresh content, etc. Recently it's been kind of dead. That's life, in the web world especially. It's certainly not because back in 2008 we didn't just say "Come with me tomorrow, I'll teach you everything, no need to waste your time searching this site!!"
I love everyone on here and I would never intentionally hurt someone's business interest. That's another 100%er I believe you would not do harm to any of us intentionally. Yet, from the replies, it's in favor of this being a bad move, on your part-even if it's nice. LOL
Hank
I'm sure you are a good man, but this is Hankypanky
I also bet I have caught bigger bass than you have! 3 Florida largemouth, weighed in at just over 10 lbs each. I also had an easy 13 pounder on the bank of a small backwoods lake. I had [stupidly] left my camera in my SUV and just didn't dare risk this fishes life. So, I can't prove that one. I've had them on and jump and break me off., that went over 15lbs a number of times.
You are still a nice guy, but I catch bigger bass!

Bad time of the year for training class for newbie's, we are cleaning our butts off, right to the boxers.
We are seeing a lot of heavy moss, maybe because of last year rain record rain fall. Nasty. No trees, heavy moss, we clean more moss right now than algae. Nothing instant with moss, except white buds that look like snow. White roofs, that's what homeowners want for 700.00
Every now and then a topic like this reminds me of something Chris Tucker said several years ago. He stated in a post, "THIS IS MADNESS" Referring to the fact that the seemingly small amount of roof cleaners at the time were so willing to give up enough of the "secrets" to make roof cleaning easy for anyone to start up. This current issue falls into the same category. What's the difference whether someone helps train hands on or is helping on these forums by spewing every bit of information they can think of. (Mixes, pumps, tricks, etc..) The territorial thing is irrelevant really, we're all helping our potential LOCAL competition, the hands on thing is a small factor after all this information has already been had.
Just like college or any type of course: The internship starts after the learning, and although valuable, not as important as the classroom learning.
I have had several requests over the years from people wanting to even pay me to learn, I just never had the interest. But being hard on Hank is unjust, he is only offering to do what we're all "guilty" of to some degree. I think mermbers here want others to pay their learniung curve dues, just as maybe they themselves had to.

PS- Chuck I added a little to my original post.
Jeff
It is too late, the Cat is already out of the bag! These boards are not as much of the problem, as the sellers of roof cleaning equipment are.
With absolutely NO "disrespect" given or intended, anyone can call Bob or Lori, and get set up to compete with YOU!
Don't think for a minute, that a distributor will not tell or show your competition HOW to do it, or even tell him what to do, where to buy the chemical, and how to mix it!
They will do anything and everything required to make the sale, to the people who can cut your throat, because this is what they do.
Not a month goes by that we don't see a NEW Roof Cleaning Competitor, armed with MY roof cleaning technology, they bought from you know who!
Anyone who wants to, can become your competitor. The question then becomes, do you help him, or not ?
It is said "keep your friends close, and your enemies closer"
I can not clean all the roofs in Tampa, so, ask yourself, can you clean all the roofs, where you live ?
Since your competition is gonna become your competition, no matter what you do, would it not be best to befriend them ?

What in the world does catching bigger bass have to do with the topic of helping or not helping a newbie? ABSOLUTLY NOTHING! Any idiot can tell you that Fl has bigger bass than PA. What’s next, are we going to drop our pants and see who has the bigger one?
Hank, if it’s not interfering with any of the members’ business then do whatever the fuk u want my friend.
Oh and Chuck, fyi, I have caught and have pictures of a 12 and 14lb bass and I'm less than half your age… (and giant kingfish, wahoo, tuna, hogfish, and blue marlin)… but who the hell cares! That’s not why we are here. This isn’t a “who has caught the biggest fish forum.” This is a "ROOF CLEANING FORUM: TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION"

Hi Jeff,
Well, I see your point, which is, I assume, don't teach them at all, not in person and not online at RCIA etc.
Gotta admit, that feeling "THIS IS MADNESS" hits me on a regular basis, yet we all keep on spewing the info out and creating more roof cleaners.
I do think there is 1 difference. Lots of people will come to RCIA, start reading and after a bit go back to mowing lawns or putting siding on etc.
If they get a quick hands on, in person lesson, they are much more likely to become a roof cleaner.

I was mostly messin' with Hank, but discussing the pros and cons of hands on teaching a guy. I know that Hank truly is just a nice guy, who catches small bass.
