My feeling exactly! "I have little to No Tolerance for roof cleaning chemicals and equipment, that either do not work, or fail to work as claimed."

In my time teaching roof cleaning on the Internet (15 years or so), I have had some makers of questionable chemical products and roof cleaning equipment plenty upset with me, because I exposed their bullchit.  So be it.

I could easily sell roof cleaning chemicals or equipment, just on my name alone. I purposely do not, because I want my advice to be untainted.

I subscribe to Consumers Reports Magazine, and they take NO ADVERTISING. LOL, I will not even buy a freaking Toaster, unless it is top rated by Consumer Reports.

Other Roof Cleaning Forums on the Internet are full of Shills Chuck, who sing the praises of certain products or roof cleaning equipment for various reasons. Mostly, to get a good deal for themselves!

I have even seen some shilling going on here from time to time, but not too bad. Most know better then to come here, and try to promote questionable roof cleaning chemicals and equipment.

If I don't "get them", then you, or our other veteran roof cleaners will.

In NC, almost all the houses have gutters and downspouts. About half of them have gutter guards, and we can't always rinse them out.

I've had great success with using Weaver plant food fertilizer 10/10/10 from Lowe's as a roof chemical neutralizer.

I've tried gypsum with ok results, not as good as 10/10/10

After bagging the downspouts, in addition to diluting the chemical with water by saturating plants near downspouts, we place a cup of fertilizer at the bottom of the downspout and any remaining chemical that drips down is neutralized.

It has more of a chemical reaction than gypsum.  You can see it foam up and if the downspout is near concrete you can tell it's working because the concrete will remain dirty! No clean streaks, like it normally does without it

Here's a picture of the 10/10/10 in action foaming and reacting with the roof mix and the concrete near it is still dirty!  IT WORKS!!

Sodium Metabisulfate or Sodium Thiosulfate may work better Mike ? Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) also neutralizes Chlorine.  LOL, do like Chuck Bergman does, dig a hole under a downspout!

The Weavers may be an Acid Based fertilizer ?

Check these out.

Sodium Metabisulfite

Sodium metabisulfite (chemical formula Na2S2O5) is also called disodium disulfite, pyrosulfurous acid and disodium salt. It is often used in the dechlorination of swimming pools, or to lower its chlorine levels. Water treatment plants employ the substance to remove trace of excessive chlorine. Sodium metabisulfite is an effective bleach neutraliser. 2.2 grams (one teaspoon) of sodium metabisulfite added to 2.5 gallons of water effectively neutralises all harmful bleach residue.

Sodium Sulfite

Sodium sulphite (chemical formula Na2SO3) is an effective, fast and cheap bleach neutraliser that is easily available at most swimming pool chemical vendors. It is typically used to stabilise high levels of chlorine in a swimming pool, and is sold under the trade names De-Chlor and Knock Down.

Ascorbic Acid

Ascorbic acid (chemical formula C6H8O6) is used commercially to neutralise bleach in water storage tanks. Bleach, which is added to water tanks as a disinfectant, needs to be completely eliminated before the water is fit for drinking or agricultural purposes. Ascorbic acid neutralises all residual bleach in a matter of seconds, and 1/4 tsp of the substance added to 1 gallon of water effectively removes all traces of bleach.

Sodium Thiosulfate

Sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3) is used in spas to lower bromine and chlorine levels. It is a valuable bleach neutraliser, and is just as effective as sodium metabisulfite, even though it is slightly more expensive.

Caution

Acids besides those mentioned in this article should not be used in an effort to neutralise bleach. Vinegar is one such substance that is erroneously purported to have a neutralising effect on bleach. Instead, vinegar acts on the hypochlorite content of bleach, turning it into hypochlorous acid and other dangerous chemicals. Hypochlorous acid can convert to deadly chlorine gas in a low pH solution. According to Rayna Gillman in the book "Create Your Own Hand Printed Cloth," hydrogen peroxide is an ineffective bleach neutraliser---contrary to popular opinion.

Yes Michael, it most certainly is a gold mine!
As Chris said "Other Roof Cleaning Forums on the Internet are full of Shills Chuck, who sing the praises of certain products or roof cleaning equipment for various reasons. Mostly, to get a good deal for themselves!"
I belong to a number of pressure washing etc forums and most of them will advertise any darn thing, if paid to do so. Or, just let unfounded statements about products abilities or methods slide on by, without a word.
that's unless I see them! I'm not good at looking the other way and shuttin' up! If I think it's a duck, I will try to prove it-even if it can't quack! Speaking of quacks, as Chris said, there's lots of Shill / quack talkers out there, with no proof of efficacy, when it comes to their pitch!
Here at RCIA or our .ORG site, false statements and unfounded claims, will most certainly be challenged and faced down, by me, Chris and others, who have done roof cleaning for a living for many years. You can fool some of the people all the time and you can fool all the people some of the time-but you can't fool all the people, all of the time! If they try here-they fail!

That's for SURE Chuck! They can run that chit on the newbies, or people who are gullible, and clean a roof every now and then.

But us working, veteran roof cleaners, know better.

Chris, do you know what brand of fertilizer this article is talking about? I have not had that severe of a reaction with the kind I am using.

And I do know what chlorine gas smells like, it will burn a hole in your lungs.

Yes, the weaver I believe is acid based. It contains 10% Nitrogen, 10% Phosphates, 10% Soluble Potash. I discovered this out of a desire to save money.

I tried the plant wash purple miracle grow fertilizer with a garden end sprayer and liked it for houses with no gutters.

I figured regular granular fertilizer would do the same and work at the ends of downspouts. It does work.

The brand is unknown Mike, but since they had a whole pallet of it, it is obviously a very popular fertilizer.

Let me ask you something Mike ? Is there ever grass right beneath the downspouts where you are putting this fertilizer ?

The reason I ask is this - There is some kind of a reaction happening as the SH and Fertilizer contact each other.

Not usually.  Most of the time customers have a concrete gutter splash block underneath the downspout.  I put a cup directly underneath the downspout after removing the bags to neutralize any remaining chemical dripping.

If there are plants near the downspouts I will also sprinkle a cup on and around them for good measure in case there is rain in the forecast right after cleaning the roof.

Bleach, fertilizer mixture sickens people at Lowe's

St. Tammany bureau

A chemical spill at a Slidell home improvement store sickened about 10 people last week, according to emergency officials.

Lowe's employees were unloading a truck at 39184 Natchez Drive on Thursday night when bleach spilled onto fertilizer, causing it to smoke and stink, Slidell Police Capt. Kevin Folz said.

A cashier called 911, and store employees used a forklift to move the smoking pallet of fertilizer outside. Police and hazardous materials personnel from the Slidell area fire department arrived at 9:15 p.m. and evacuated the store.

Two employees who had tried to stop the chemical reaction with kitty litter were having difficulty breathing and complained of a burning sensation on their skin. One unidentified 54-year-old employee began to vomit and was checked by rescue workers but refused treatment, Folz said.

Fire Chief Larry Hess said the spill released chlorine gas from the bleach and 31 people, mostly employees, were evaluated. Ten people were treated for symptoms such as watery or burning eyes, but no one was hospitalized. After about 40 minutes of ventilation, employees were allowed back inside the store.

A manager at Lowe's said Tuesday that no one suffered any long-term health effects.

The incident occurred when a forklift was unloading a pallets from a truck in the receiving area of the store, according to Folz. A case of bleach fell onto a pallet of fertilizer, and one of six bottles began to leak. "It was a very small amount," Hess said.

The fire chief praised the employees' decision to move the fertilizer outside. "That was a smart thing to do," he said. Hess added that quick action by the workers, along with rescue personnel and police, "kept it from being a serious situation.

A lot of Fertilizer contains amonium nitrate, and we all know what happens when bleach and ammonia are mixed together.

Thanks for the caution Chris, I endedup having to run to the job to be the ground man-my son got the earlier work done sooner than expected! After 19 years at this, he's getting faster=more efficient!

I certainly will use caution-I always do-in testing this and I will only try it with the exacy fertilizer recommended!

Mike's situation is different Chuck. Most of the downspouts have concrete pads under them, and here in Florida, there is usually only Grass under the downspouts. The Fertilizer/SH reaction may cause the chlorine to burn itself out, but when the 2 substances contact each other, the violent reaction will most likely kill the grass.

Ya, I get excited about trying any new ideas, but I think I may back off on this one. My lungs are bad enough after using SH since 1989. I don't want to chance creating a damaging gas. If I do try it, it will be at my house, with one of my "never used" gas masks!
