Charlie a good place to start is go to Googles Webmaster Tools. Everytime you run into a link on the help pages, click them and read everything. Google really wants to match what you have with the people who are looking for you, as long as what you have is good.

Click on your screen name top right corner, Then click on Signature on left side of the page and fill it out, Name,Phone #, Company and your location.
