I know ill get a ton of heat for this and you guys really frown upon it but we use 20'' whisper wash surface cleaners on our Tile roofs. I would never use them on shingle, we chemical wash those. We spray 20% chlorine first then clean, we are very good at it and 9/10 never break a tile, half the time we are going up on roofs and finding many broken tiles from whomever did it before. We go over anything that was missed with a wand, using 24hp 8gpm machines usually cleans it very well with 25045 tips in the disc. I also do a little bit of low pressure but only when the home has gutters Im completely set up for it with a 6hp gas powered chemical pump and 300gal tank. i just mix up SH, TSP and water but sometimes it doesn't work as well as it should and I get fed up with it.
Yes Gino, you will get a ton of heat for that... Tile roofs usually require a 50% solution to clean them. 20% is not strong enough to kill Gloeoscapa Magma and the pressure rinse will wash away any residue that might have killed the spores. 9/10 of not breaking a tile is not acceptable as it gives our profession a bad rap. There is no excuse for damaging a customjers roof. Using a surface cleaner on a roof takes time. Time is money. Using the proper solution dilution ratio will clean the roof is far less time than what you are doing and you will make more profit. Learn by educating yourself on this forum, drop the surface cleaner on the roof trick, and become more profitable. Out of curiosity, what did SH & TSP not clean off of the roof??? I have not had that problem yet. If my solution will not clean it I make it stronger till it does clean the roof.
Gino, welcome to RCIA, we let the chem's do the work, I have never cleaned a tile roof so I won't tell you how to do tile. Bump up the SH and give it a try, you may never have that surface cleaner on another roof.
We only rinse about 20% of the time. Let mother nature do the work, while your on another job making mo money. Just trust it, moving those spores with water pressure does little in terms of eradication, plus your selling process will get better with the eliminating spores vs. moving them deep in the tile groves.

Welcome Gino! WE clean tile roofs w/o gutters chemically every day here in Tampa. LOL, it helps to have tarps!
Gino, if you tarp the bushes and have a good water job done by the ground man you should never torch any plants. Just make sure the solution drains away from the plants roots. I like to use a strong solution on the tile roofs that I clean because they are usually 4k-6k sq ft homes and I do not have time to go back and do touch ups. Dilution is the key ingredient to any runoff. Many people like to softwash. I do not. I prefer a 13 hp honda gx390 with a gear driven pump that puts out 8.5 gpm. That much water has never failed me. When the house has gutters I also use AC's gutter cane to diluted any solution in the gutters before it has a chance to go down the down spouts. If the customer does not have gutters we use old 4' x 8' political signs (Check out my facebook page on June 2012 for an example) that we collect after election day that are made out of coreoplast (may be spelled wrong). I put these signs under the eves and let the soluton fall off of the roof onto them while they are sprayed off at the same time. Be careful when it hot tarping plants. In Texas it gets so hot in the summer that a tarped plant will die due to heat stress.
Good luck getting rid of the bad habit of man handling a surface washer on the roof. Some one will get hurt doing so and once your solution is dialed in your will never go back to using one as they limit your profitability.

Thanks for the great info guys I appreciate it a lot. I really want to get away for the surface cleaner method, we actually did a chem roof today and it went pretty well, I used 40gallons SH and 60gal of water, 12lbs of tsp and dawn dish soap, It didn't soap up as much as I hoped and was running off but it did the job, I will post some photos. Marcus I think my ratios were off in the past, I sometimes don't want to make it to strong just because I don't want to torch any plants. Chris we do use tarps and my guys are on the ground covering things up and keeping everything wet constantly, in the past I have only burnt one bush and replaced it for the homeowner. Again thanks for all the input everyone.
Gino fyi there are some good chlorine stable surfactants that can be used and even bought by the drum. It can wind up costing the same as Dawn and it wont destroy your chlorine.
At the end of last season Chris T. posted a good thread re. a replacement for Dawn dish soap ... ULTRA GAIN dishwashing liquid ... chlorine stable, better scent masking, great cling and same price point. Lots of great information using the search button. Good luck !

Brother Gino, when using TSP, it is always best to allow the amount you are gonna use to soak in the tank with water overnight.
TSP needs some time to soak to unleash it's magic.
Replace the Dawn with Ultra Gain Original Scent Dish Soap. Only use TSP Gino on bare cement tile roofs, on glazed tile is is not needed.
Thanks again for all the great info Marcus its helps a lot. It does also get very hot down here also I will keep that in mind about the tarps, the political signs are a great idea we have tons of them around here and i know a sign guy so I could probably get some of that board form him. I have a big project coming up and do not want to surface clean it, their are 14 four story buildings and I am hoping to use a mix to get them done. Thanks Ed and Thomas I will look into the different soap for sure. Chris I have been mixing up the tsp and water the night b4 should I be stirring it or just dumping it in and letting it sit. I buy the powder substance from home-depot. Is there somewhere else to buy it? I will try the new soap this week for sure. Thanks again everyone this is extremely helpful.
