Guys, back when I started the RCIA, we simply did not have the members we do now. I felt it would be kind of a hardship for those seeking Roof Cleaning Certification, to be forced to come here to Tampa Florida, where I could test and Certify them personally.
So, we did the best we could, with online testing, and a verbal test, admisistered by me.
All things being equal, I strongly feel there is no substitute for actual on the job testing of anyone seeking Certification, and so the RCIA is looking for a Certification Testing and Standards Committee.
The very best of the best, these individuals will be charged with the task of making more RCIA Certified Roof Cleaners, if the person seeking RCIA Certification earns it, by demonstrating roof cleaning proficiency, on the job.
I am thinking strongly of bringing back the title of RCIA Master Certified Roof Cleaning Instructor. Only THIS time, our Masters will earn that title!
This will be a PAID position Guys.
No one works for nothing, and I do not expect any of our Masters to Certify people, for free.
Guys, I am sort of "thinking out loud here", but want to know your thoughts on this, and if you feel this is a good idea for the RCIA, or not ?
I have been teaching roof cleaning for well over 10 years. Quite frankly, I am quite sick and tired of hearing people claim that "RCIA Roof Cleaning Certification is meaningless".
I am not in this for the money, for if I was, I would simply either hook up with every roundtable, or have my own, and crank out RCIA Certifications in classes of 20 or more, at 350.00 a head.
THAT is how you make money, at the Certification Game!
I really want RCIA Certifications to have meaning, and IMHO, that is why we need to INSIST that someone actually Demonstrate their proficiency to one of our Master, on a roof, they deserve to be RCIA Certified.
AS usual, I want to hear from our members, before I enact thee new requirements/
Just kicking ideas here, tossing them out for comment:
What if RCIA certification involved a "day of service" with an RCIA "Master"? Then also followed up with a minimum number of roofs cleaned ( 5, 10?) before certification was achieved?
That Day of service could be spent with a RCIA member in a different market ( 3-4 hours away) so the member isn't directly training their competition.
Also maybe the cert game would be better served by hooking up with the UAMCC and offering cert classes at their traveling events? That would give us exposure to more people. I know each time I have gone to an event I've dropped $$$ on classes to help increase my knowledge. It would also save you the leg work of having to arrange all the events, you'd just be piggybacking on their schedule.
Do we still have all the documents/ideas the "cert" committee was working on early last year? i know we've lost a lot of those guys.

Hey Chris, As I just posted this in another thread, I don't think RCIA Certicication is meningless,.after all,..I have it on my business cards, so I do think a certification carries some weight. I just see it as a tough road is all. Maybe I 've never jumped on the certification idea wholly because when this certification process started I was already an established business with plenty of work, and no competition to speak of,. and it still continues. And I will say, my roof cleaning process and equipment ideas were tweaked greatly by being a part of this forum. Guys just starting out and guys in a "flooded" area could benefit.
I think it is a fine idea. What would you do about the members that are already certified? I always thought that their should be a minimum of cleaned roofs to show some experience, with some pictures or something.
Certification is not viewed as a joke. Maybe roof cleaners from other forums or other sites may make fun of certification and that RCIA has a certification, but I feel that it is just other roof cleaners, forums and groups that are bitter or jealous that they think of it first. Roof cleaning certification caries alot of weight with potential customers' and I have landed 2 large condo projects and a lot of houses because of RCIA, and being RCIA ceritified.
Chris I have been saying this for at least a yr now. This would solidify the certification and make it more acceptable thru ought our industry. I would be willing to be a trainer up in the northeast. I would also make sure that they understand how to run a business as well and be competitive with their rates.
First of all I do and will always will support the RCIA but I've got to note the following. This year we had 16 customers who found us through our promotional posts here on RCIA(THANK YOU) and couldn't care less if I was certified or not. They were more concerned with the status of my insurance, contractors license and my ability to provide references. Of all the other customers we serviced this year no one was even interested in knowing if I was certified or not. They felt the same as the previously noted 16. In all our flyers, business cards, etc we mention RCIA. One informed customer did mention that he thought the certification was just a marketing ploy. He hired us based on one of our customer referrals. I thought his comment was a shame but without some tie in to other sanctioning bodies, chemical supplier or goverment we lack some credibility.
I believe it's a good idea to have newbies, like myself(somewhat), and others, attend a training session(day of service) with guys like Mike DeRose of Diamond, Ed Thompson, Eric of A & E or Barry Landis before certification can be issued. I have no issue with traveling to their shops. In one of my posts earlier this year I made mentioned that I would move forward on certification once I did a predetermined number of homes. I do believe a set number of homes serviced should be established.

Mike makes a great point. This may help to create a general pricing baseline much like plumbers, electricians, painters, lawyers are competitive in their areas. While there will always be lowballers, they may not know that they are the "one" and even after they disappear, the damage is done to the industry.
Chris, as you may recall I was the first one to be certified under the present certification. Though I don't promote it, I don't see anything wrong with a certification that indicates the service provider adheres to the proper cleaning process and adheres to certain standards, i.e. insurance, safety, etc. I do agree that certification via online holds less merit than someone going to a training location. This may well apply more to the new people coming into the roof cleaning business. Though ofor us that have a customer base and branding in the roof cleaning business may not apply.
Though I by far do not have the years of experience as some here. I have trained others in the sense we use the same equipment, cleaning process, solution/mix etc. I have found that hands on training, putting the person on the ladder is much more effective then explaining over the phone or online.
If it were me, I'd set up a certified training location in 5-6 places and promote the training dates on the forums for RCIA certification. Obviously you'd pick the trainers and they would be spread apart far enough that some don't have to travel forever to get to the training location. Set a minimum and maximum amount of participants and allow the trainer to knock out several in one day.

Thats fine for you guys in the States but what about those of us overseas who would like to get certified but may not want or be able to travel. I will be signing up to the current system if it is still on offer.
No worries Mike, I have not been home in a long time { county Mayo } I will fly over and bring Art with me this way you get the best bang for the buck!
I think certification of roof cleaning and business operation are two VERY different things. I have graduated with others students who shared teaching degrees like myself. They get a piece of paper with a name and certification. Put them in a class room and it looked like a zoo. Mike if your teaching them how to run a business I would be ringing the cash register.
Also Chris, I'm an honest guy, being "certified" doesn't really do it for me. I am very proud to be a member, and trust me I do tell all of my customers I am a member. THE big selling point for me on being certified was the LINK on the "find a certified roof cleaner" I was actually planning on getting certified for that reason, but then all this crap happened and board changes... I am hoping to get the board change rolling, and also hoping for certification to come with SEO perks on the new board.
I think this is a great idea. honestly i have some other ideas that id like to share with you chris, but in private about things that could be done for this industry.
