There is no difference. Both are victims of addiction. As employers and part of society we must recognize the fact that both are illnesses.

I've been blessed to not have any family members associated with addiction. However, I've seen plenty of good people taken down by drugs and alcohol while I was in "corporate america". On the other side of the coin I have several close friends who have been clean and sober for years and have turned out to be great family men and contributors to society.

Cancer is a disease not using drugs or drinking. You have a choice to use, you don't have a choice if you get cancer.

I will gladly engage in this argument, my first response was answering Chris's joke about the differences between the two. To debate with Mike, cancer is a disease so is type 2 diabetes. The difference is that type 2 diabetes is typically caused by obesity, and it most cases can be prevented. Drug use and binge drinking are a symptoms of disease know as (anxiety, depression, or OCD). Drug use and binge drinking can be prevented with proper medication in order to correctly balance chemicals in the brain. Questions? This doesn't involve employees and is off topic, but can be talked about in the shade?
