I got more $ for a roof in 1999 than I can get now. All due to the guys who prefer to do 3 roofs a day cheaper and lose track of operating costs, only to see later, they should have just charged what others were charging and grow by doing better work etc, instead of by doing cheap work and knocking out a bunch a day.

I agree! I am too old to do a bunch of jobs in one day. LOL I'd much rather do one job per day and charge the price that I know I am worth and be home relaxing on the couch by noon. I'd rather work smart than hard. JMHO

I'm sorry your jealous of me.. im 31, 32 in a month.. i bought my first home at 23. i was expelled from high school. i have a GED. i never went to college.. I'm self taught and been lucky enough to meet people that teach the RIGHT way to do things..

I lived in las vegas during the housing boom, i lived in Winter Haven Florida and Managed ALL (198 Employees) of polk county for Wachovia/Wells Fargo bank.. (florida peeps will know Polk county and Laugh)...

its called MANAGEMENT.. you may want to look it up.. My other main company is www.nanapetrillos.com.. i had to be there every day whe i started it, but now its grown, i have a manager, and i go there 1 time a week to collect money and drop off payroll.. other then that i dont do anything except collect money and pay bills..

the other business is real estate.. but thats pretty simple.. once a month, everyone pays me rent lol...

If the going rate in my my area was $1300 for a ranch, I'd be shooting for $1300. But I really dont think theres a single market that calls for that kind of price. What gives Joe?

Hello Joe. I see you have been a member for about 9 months and are 32 years old.

You have a right to do business any way you please. Of course, when you post your business methods publicly, like this, you have to expect scrutiny and opinions, especially from some us older guys [ I am just double your age ] who have had years of experience at this and have seen the different outcomes of "maintaining the going rates" or "Underbidding" to get more quantity of jobs.

In the end, those of us who have done this for many years, 23 years for me, just in Florida, it becomes abundantly clear, that cutting prices, cuts your own throat too, in the end.

As to some cheapir "Roof Shampoo" or a pressure washer etc, taking the job from you at $300, as you mentioned, people who want a #300.00 job are gonna pay $300, so you won't get any of them either, unless you are ready to work for such a low profit, that your business will fail.

In my area, that underbidding has gone on long enough, that the general public feels that 13 to 18 cents a square foot is about all a roof cleaning is worth.

I have to have knowledgeable discussions with most every prospective customer, in order to get top dollar, which is, for me, in this *overly saturated with cheapie roof cleaners* area 16 to 20 cents a sq ft.

Before all the lowballers came along, pricing was fine here. In the year 2000 I did fewer jobs and made $19,000 more profit than I made this year.

Had all roof cleaners stuck with charging a decent rate years ago, as they did back in 2000, it would never have come to this.

Just a bit of advice from one of the older roof cleaners and not meant to be insulting or have any negative intention toward you.

Oh by the way Joe I got a good nose for B.S. even when I read it. Lets see Im doing well selling italian ices and people just paying me rent. So every week let me go out and wash roofs.. And since my other two companys are doing so well I'll do this work very cheap just to break even. I think your serving the galepo Joe..I don't think anyone on here would be washing roofs if they didnt have to. How's your grey benz running?

i completely agree with you.. the customer stated they got 2 other prices.. it just so happend i was the 3rd to be called.. they said the one seemed like a rediculous amount of money, they also said the guy seemed arrogant.. i asked the price..they told me.. then I named the contractor.. actually he used to be on this site, but i guess not anymore... I know Landis probably knows who im talking about..

they 2nd price they got was for Roof Shampoo.. i explained to him how he actually pressure washes and yada yada yada.. i told them id do it for 50 bucks lower then him just so they didnt ruin their roof.. they were happy.. it was a small rancher.. i was honestly there for 45 minutes...

Now I'm sorry, but I wouldnt be able to sleep at night if I ripped people off.. I did that long enough in the damn banking world.. and thats why I left.. I can make a living with out screwing other people over...

from what i heard... the first contractor over leveraged himself.. has a HUGE debt service amount, and is trying to make it up i guess by charging huge amounts.. his one estimator truck, i see siting at the employees house EVERY time i drive by.. we even did a house wash LITERALY 2 houses down...

now imagine that.. you have a soft wash truck in your driveway every day.. and your neighbor 2 houses down hires someone else... thats just not right.. but i was glad to put a lawn sign up..

No Joe I'm not jealous of you, and yes I would like a copy of your lease on the ice shop. The payment records on the benz and a copy of all your rentals. Please also send a copy of your P.A. license,then I will look up your home on google and say wow! Why didn't you pay your moms car off? I do only work three days a week till noon but I dont drink beer. I also don't say " player " sounds odd. Please send your face book page, Also I charge for motivating people please send $100 dollars or a fifty dollar gift certificate to your ice cream shop. Sorry to hear you were ripping people off in the banking world, maybe thats why you left or had to? You didn't mention doing anything for your father? Thought about adding Stardek as another product to roof cleaning. No license required same as sealing black top driveways. This seems to be big in Florida visited my parents in an rv park in Zepher Hills and just about every driveway was done. Not sure if it will work in the North as its not guaranteed against scratching from snow plows. Scratches however can be repaired I am told. Product is guaranteed with snow blower use, maybe just throw in a cheap electric snow blower.

Joe, I was wondering how you ended up doing with your flier campaign? Going to be investing a bit of money back into the business and that was one of the avenues I was going to do.

been doing very good with the campain.. running roughly 25k worth of fliers a month as well as some back covers on a midweek.. early June i did 4 zones at once which was about 46k worth of flyers.. I keep just saturating the zones.. if someone has any thought of one of the services i provide, i want them to think of our company first.. i dont expect a phone call the minute they get a flyer.. im more for building the brand reconigizion.. so i feel like thats working as ive had customers say they have seen our signs on a few houses... im pulling back on the flyers now though and adding more into our adword campaign.. thats been roughly 1500 a month to google. but its worth it.. sales since march have been in the 25k range a month. so im right on target on where i wanted to be YTD...

You have to respect Pat for calling out when he feels the market is jeopardized by folks slashing prices. Many of us do not absolutely have to be in this trade. Chit, we can all go work at Lowes or Home Depot right? But we chose this because we saw an opportunity to do something fairly new. With a new needed service comes high margins for those who take advantage. I fought with my wife staying up many late nights sifting through tons of material when I started on this forum, because I knew. I even got through my own battles with Pat. And though, at the time, I wanted to leave a burning bag of poo on his doorstep, he was merely protecting a market location that he wasnt even in. Joe, you may be 25% cheaper than most and think thats fine. What kind of argument will you have when the next guy is 25% cheaper than you? And so on and so forth. You need to respect Pat because one day he may be protecting the market in your own backyard. And even though Pat egged you on, its not very becoming to list all of your achievements. It sounds boastful. Thats how smart Pat is, he got you.
