Joe it seems like you found a way to be insulted from something in this thread. You chimed in as to why Im not doing millions with 4 trucks. If you dont like my answer and you think my office is a joke then mind your own business. My only point of this thread was to ask: If youre seeking beach money, how are you doing it?

no i said it seemed odd that you arent doing more in sales with those numbers for trucks..

as for the insulted part.. yes actually I was insulted when the responses were "when you blah blah blah then come talk to me"

that comes across as pure arogance.. but hell since you seem to know everything.. no prob. ill mind my own business...

Well I'm learning alot. I think I understand diminished returns. Quality of workers. Quality of their work. Me and Bill last year talked. Why cant employees wash the same as we do and take pride in their work same as we do. I've got my first call back on a job, a house wash! WHAT! How can you mess that up.

I'm not as big or smart as many guys here. I would like to hope, as this thread started. Do you want to make some serious money; Grow your biz. That is is possable to trust 2 guys to go out and make me money.

Jo
Im going to bet you that each of eds trucks have probrably brought in atleast 70k or better so i dont really understand your aurgument or why your so mad, its his business not yours. He's just trying to find another avenue for some recurring revenue.

I have one truck (sales) and one work truck with 2 employees. I have brought in atleast 90,000 plus since march. My call volume is around 3-5 calls a day plus 2-4 email estimates requests. I have definetly increased my overhead as well as sales. I just think at some piont it flatlines and the profit isnt what you think it is.

The only way to really make a million plus in sales is to either get a goverment contract or do 10-15 50,000 dollar commercial jobs per yr(good luck with that).

ive looked into expanding into pest/lawn spraying.. there's a TON of paperwork and licensing.. seemed extremely taxing to get into on the paperwork end.. there's so many lawn care specialists in my area, it would be dumb for me to attempt.. but as for roofs.. there's maybe 3 other companies doing it the right way.. and charging through the roof.. so its easy to win business..

Yea Ive slowly started charging more. Trying to tell my RCIA friends around here we can do that! Have to do that. Our insurance, gas, wages are higher up here. We can get that price.

Nice answer Ray. A Nice Guy answer! smile

But I have been in business in Florida since 1989 and the fact is, we have to spend money to work 52 weeks a year to make 1/2 the $ they get up North. Not knocking them! GOOD FOR THEM! Just the facts is all.

Down here, no matter how big a roof is, if it's not over a full days work, you will be shootin' craps to bid it over $700.00

Too many other bidders will underbid you. We have 100 competitors to the North's one.

Chuck

Thanks Ed, I respect you too! You have made a great success of your business! I do have to admit, when I read that someone up North just did a residential roof for $1200.00 it still freaks me out! The last 2 years, I have tried hard to get higher prices, without losing customers. But, I am still averaging only $.13 - $.14 a square foot [under roof] on shingled roofs and $.15 - $.18 a sq ft on tile. In the winter, when our population goes up by a third, with "Snowbirds" I can do 2 roofs a day, in summer, I'm lucky to have 1 every day. The problem all lies in our having loads and loads of competition. I know I will be one of 4 bids. Because of that, I try to bid jobs within a few hours of their call-if possible- and in person, so I can explain to them, that some lower bidders are going to be selling them a pressure washing job and explaining the benefits of non-pressure. I also hand them an albumn of before, during and after photos to browse through, as I walk around their house to see how much to charge and how much work will have to go into protecting plants. Down here, most every house has an enourmous amount of plants and many cant take a whiff of SH without dropping their leaves or kicking the bucket.

As to your initial post, I didn't see where you deserved any flack at all?

Chuck

PS: Here's a picture of an average home's vegetation here. I did this one last month:

Good post, Ed. I've began to look into other ways to make loads of money in addition to cleaning. I think we can earn a great living from owning an exterior cleaning business, but we have a huge problem with the fact that this business is very seasonal. I like cleaning and I am looking forward to training employees to work for me without my assistance all day, but having more than 2 trucks on the road is not something I really want, it's already a pain in my ass dealing with the never ending issues maintaining one truck and all of the equipment.

It feels great to make over $1,000 in one day, and several thousand per week, but it stinks knowing that it all ends around November and then we have to fight to keep the employees and hope we made enough to get by for winter.
