is the ruler on google earth accurate?

Clyde, I verified the accuracy of the google earth ruler. It's as good as it gets with what we need it for. Don't forget to use street view to get an idea of the pitch of the roof and how far up the roof the gable runs are.

Clyde, we use the property appraisers web site to get s.f. but in some cases have to resort to Google Earth and it's pretty accurate. For kicks, I did a quick take off of my own house and had a 62 s.f. difference. that roughly only and 8'x8' area not including pitch. He might be giving you "under air" numbers and leaving out the "auxiliary" s.f. which could be the garage, front porch, roof over screened in porch or deck.

Here is one that is similar to what you migh be dealing with. After looking at the building sketch on the property appraisers office, the auxiliary s.f. below is made up of the garage and open porches that are all under the roof.

I just had a a pitch that raised the sq ft by about 1000

I had mentioned this in the calculator thread. Never go by the sqft that the customer tells you.If they insist then just agree & give them your price based on your sqft. The sqft is not important in the end but the price sure is.

Right on, I refigured the square footage I was about eight hundred high, but I always round up. So me and the owner are in the middle. No biggie.

but serioulsy isn't that google earth ruler exact when measuring from point A to B?

It can be dead on or way off. For roof cleaning it's ok but I would never trust it with a roof installation or anything of that nature.
