I was thinking about finding a generic B&A from the internet to show the effects of a roof wash, not necessarily one of my own but elected against it. I pick everything up tomorrow and will be cleaning two friends' houses on my way home. One has a pretty shallow pitch so the B&A wont be that great, but the other should come out nicely. I'll post a few pics of that target house.
I'm surprised I didn't get any feedback on the "can I get your opinion on a name" pitch for door-door canvassing. Good? Bad?

As soon as I get that house clean I'll take a butt load of photos. I plan on having a website, and eventually a Galaxy Tab to carry while canvassing. I figure I could have a gallery of B&A pics to show at the door. Plus, I can do everything but clean a roof with a Tab.
James, I am not sure if you haven't noticed but most of your replys are coming from what is called "premium members" and the reason for that is many guys like your self were extremely excited in the beginning like you to find this place, however much of the questions you have asked will receive a better response if you align with the premium members by joining as we have done. It is a $100 fee to access the premium members area, and there are guys that will be more inclined to answer some things not hand feed, but give you a bit more info. And you just may have some things that you could share too, I am sure you do. If your interested in doing this it has been said many times by others it is the best $100 you could spend. If you would like to do that find Gary under users listed and send him a pm to inquire. Kim R
I was wondering about the weather conditions myself.
James - you should slow down a bit before you get yourself into promises that can't be made, or worse, cause some damage! Once you get the equipment you need to go through and see how everything operates and possibly do some trial runs with water only, until get the feel for the equipment. Heading right out to do some jobs sounds like trouble waiting to happen.

Mike is that really you posting, is it necessary? He is new and let's give some help, rather than that. Ok? James , your images are stretching the thread you can edit them and shrink them down after you upload them or shrink them before you upload. I really thin we need a new comers welcome pack to explain things like this I would rather you figure this out for the next 100+ pics of your jobs you will post if you choose to be a premium member. Uhhhh.... nevermind.
You gotta have thick skin, There is so much here. I was a knuckle head coming in. Though it would be put on a plate for me.
Lots of time to read. Use the search button and read.
Wanna build a trailer, hit the search. I built my trailer here, and so did others. it's all there. Everything.
Is there better stuff on the paid side, yes. Is everything you need to get started on free side, yes.
Hot water trailer build, this spring, will be affordable because puting everything from cold water trailer on hot one, going fromm 100ft reel, 100 backup, pressure line, 150 ft chem line, both 300 foot. 75 on supply line will stay the same, just need the 2 reels and line.
Kim, I had to develop thick skin. I was horrible over at TGS years ago! I dont know why but Beth never ban me. Her and Celeste and many others, they were right and I was wrong, I changed, I read, I understood more, I asked better questions.
About the pic thing I posted here I think once like that! way too big! I caught hell! lol!!! Here or TGS? Took me a while to figure and remeber it. It was important to not post like that again, and get the chit! lol!!
Forgot your name already poster. I gave you some history and some heads up. Use it, fit in quicker than I did, lol!!!
Well, luckily the guy I'm buying the business from has written an e-book on starting a roof cleaning business, including chemicals, cleaning process, complete diagram for his trailer along with parts list reflecting sources and prices, marketing, etc, etc. He told me he wont let me leave with the trailer until he feels confident that I understand how to use everything correctly and safely. Most other guys would be offended, but I was respectfully appreciative to hear that. It told me he wasn't just looking to sell it and be done, he wants to see it prosper regardless of who owns it. Depending upon how successful it becomes, I wouldn't think twice about maybe in a month or so throwing some cash in an envelope and dropping it off as a thank you.
I do entirely plan on premium membership, but taking on this biz has exhausted all my surplus money. What is left tomorrow after I buy it is going to my own biz license and enough chemicals to do a house or two (honestly, I haven't asked how much he had left over). When I was a fireman, there was a minimum set of classes that were required to be released to active duty. But I was motivated to learn more, train harder, drive across the state for classes, and enrich my personal skill set. This helped to ensure I was delivering the best service I could to my community, that my crew could depend upon my proficiency, and that we could all go home. I am out of that life now, but that doesn't mean I don't want to carry the same consistency. I intend on getting every certification I can in order to provide the most knowledgeable and professional service to my clients.
Case in point, look at what it takes to become a paramedic in South Carolina. A year and a half of focused medical classroom lecture, 455 hours of ride time on a full time ambulance (unpaid), 500 hours of clinical rotations in a hospital (also not paid), and a battery of written and practical examinations. Although I am barely in roof cleaning kindergarten, I am fully prepared to learn all that is required to strive toward mastery of the profession, eventually.
Also, being from a fire service background, I'm used to the harassment, hazing, ball-busting, and general "picking-on" that comes with being the new guy. Back at 'the house', if you weren't getting your bed and box spring swapped, your bunker boots filled with water, your helmet thrown in the bucket of the tower ladder, or coming back at 4am from a six hour fire to find someone hid three folding chairs under your bed sheets (my personal favorite), then you've failed to gain the acceptance of the crew and should seek life elsewhere.
Don't worry about hurting my feelings. I've seen enough October ball games in the Bronx, I can die a happy man.
I hope everything works out great for you, just know that what chemicals he has will either be surfactant and helpful to you. Or it will be SH and probably no good due to shelf life. Most of us understand how it is to be far spread financially at one point or another, especially when chasing a dream or aspiration. Just know that a membership here is as good a tool to you as is your trailer and pump. I hope you can make it to the premium side soon!
Great attitude James! I also think your previous training experience will serve you well here and in the roof cleaning trade. I still think you better do some more reading here before you start spraying Friday @ 0800. I would take up the offer of a phone call to a professional here.
Best of luck with your new found business venture.
I got sidetracked today when I went on craigslist to show my girlfriend's sister my post to see what she thought. I wanted the opinion of someone with absolutely no idea what roof cleaning is (my girlfriend has had to put up with me talking about it at least 8 hours a day; She's had so much roof cleaning info shoved into her ears that I've got her making the realtor-only flyer to fax to all the real estate brokerages). When I went looking for it I found two other companies advertising on craigs. One is a big (a few states) pressure washing service that also does soft washing for roofs, the other is two guys on a roof.......that's what they're called. It tasted like crap to find out that there was more competition than I had thought, but that's business. In reality, I'll have to differentiate my company from the others. That part is easy, getting them to say yes to a free demo (a 4ft polka dot, or a square on their roof) that I've been having trouble with. It may just be the neighborhoods. It's tricky finding a 'hood here that is high end enough to see the value in the service, but that isn't too high end to have NS signs and call the cops. I didn't get any gigs for Friday so I guess I'll benefit from having the extra time to research and practice on my own roof.
Well, I got all the equipment yesterday. I'll post up a complete list of all the gear when i get a second. It's been too cold today (high of 48) so I haven't had a chance to use it. We did fire it up at his house and he had me spray plain h2o on his roof for about 20 minutes. The pump pulsates a little bit (Allflo diaphragm pump), but it'll spray a good 40ft. Hopefully tomorrow will be warm enough I can at least do a few demos, maybe start making some money. My #1 priority is to do a chem only gig for a friend, the one I posted pics of. We'll see how the weather goes.
