For guys that are packing it in, something to consider before you do

Up in Michigan, Randy & I were driving around today and seen what looked like a roof cleaning set-up in  the back of a pick-up, ( it did have a plow) giveaway to what we believe is a de-icing tank w/chems to spray walkways & driveways.. in taking things a step further depending on the  solution it could also be used for roof ice dams..

So  all of the northern guys may want to re-think putting the gear away as this could be an add on for winter, as long as the chems do not react in the tanks etc,  or just p/u new tanks and swap them out during the season.

I  envision that airplane de-icing chems cannot possibly be corrosive??? but then again I am no chemist..

Thoughts on this?

Just some food for thought to possibly keep you guys working and not starving. biggrin

Liquid De-Icers

The process of de-icing can be done in a number of ways. A common method for de-icing and also for prevention of ice formation is to use liquid de-icers. The primary advantage is they are environmentally friendly and provide for low corrosion. Some areas to use this type of product are places like sidewalks, steps, loading docks, ramps, doorways, parking lots, or a walking platform. It is preferred often over granular deicer agents because it does not leave a residue behind. It is non-toxic and ready to use. The user does not need to mix or dilute it. You can use it before or after a storm. It allows for up to 48 hours of activity prior to the storm. Ideal locations for this deicer are:

Use hand held sprayers for application of this product. One Gallon of this chemical is needed per 800-1,000 sq.ft. to get good coverage, Some snow / ice will dissipate on its own, otherwise a shovel is all you need. No heavy equipment is needed for removal of snow or ice. Productivity and efficiency is the main benefit. As an example, if a driveway normally takes one hour to clear without the de-icer, then it would take 10 minutes if applied 48 hours before a storm hits.

  • Hospitals, Clinics, or Nursing Homes
  • Schools
  • Commercial Buildings
  • Railroads
  • Restaurants
  • Hotels
  • Churches
  • Government Facilities

Use the Heat Wave liquid de-icers for applications in areas up to -25 °F for deicing or anti-icing needs. If pre-wetting at extremely low temperatures up to -45 °F, use the Road Guard as a great solution. It can be mixed with sodium chloride brine and is 85% less corrosive than rock salt or sodium chloride. It is used primarily for prevention of snow and ice in extreme cold weather. Consider using any of these deicer products as a way of helping prevent accidents and lawsuits.

Kim I started looking into this a few months ago and have some ideas that i think will help us northerners use current equipment to work thru the winter but got sidelined.  Gonna revisit my old notes but it used biodegradable plant based solivants to melt ice/snow at low temps w/o killing vegitation.

The liquid de-icer is not a ice melter like salt. It will make it easier to remove snow, and it will help to keep ice from forming. But, to be able to clear ice dams on roofs by spraying this stuff after the snow and ice is there, it does not work that way. Wish it did. As for using our equipment to spray this stuff on parking lot's and driveways, it will work, but, it is hard to find a company that will pay the price.
I can count on one hand the amount of companies that will pay for this service in my area.

I get what your saying but some areas get better luck than others and it may be something to consider as opposed to sitting on your hands this winter, There has to be some chemical that will work on ice dams for roofs, usually it is a powder or granule form, but if it is in that form, then liquid is not so far fetched. Just something for guys to research a bit and who knows??? I think at one point ( 20yrs ago) spraying roofs with chems was looked at strange too. Most were pressure washing them.

It would be great if we could find a Chem that would work for this application. Would a salt mix get clogged up in the pump? I know a lot of guys who use a salt puck, they will throw them every few feet on top of the ice dam and it works like a charm!

The SH used for cleaning breaks down to salt so salt shouldn't be an issue, now it has me thinking that old SH may be a good deicer in itself?? As far as killing vegetation it will be in hibernation and not really susceptible to over spray or run off. and by the time plants start blooming again it will have all washed away.
I look at it this way why not keep looking at this, it would be awesome if guys could use their set-ups to make winter cash!

Testing time.. who has ice and snow and some old pure SH, not mix.

ICE PUCKS- Get your pitching skills back in shape!

for the roof -  Calcium Chloride which is safe and is sold by roof supply houses but in bagged granules. These you can pitch up on the roof like Zach was talking about.

The apply the deicer on the walkways--

Think about for marketing how many older people have heart attacks maintaining the ice & snow on their drives/walkways and the ice dams on the roofs.

Let alone the accidents caused by slip & falls..

It could be a new market??

Is there anyone on here that offers these services in Maryland, Virginia or the District of Columbia? If you do offer this service, call me tomorrow morning on my cell at 240-274-0300 for referrals.

I'm logging close to 2,000 hits a day on my site and 300-500 calls a day for these services.

I did a segment for Channel 9 news on Monday and 4 different segments for channel 5 news yesterday and we are completly buried under calls.

Mike,
This was from last year, a post made over at PWI. Henry was in a few newscasts which brought him this massive load of work, which means there is a demand for it. He also explained that he was overwhelmed with calls from the newscasts that he could not handle it all, so he was subbing many out to guys like your self.
Does that help?

I have used the pucks up here, they will work, but not good enough to offer them to paying customers. As for spraying the roof cleaning mix on the roof the melt the snow and ice dams. Tried it, does not work. Up here, it is not the prevention that is needed, it is the removal of the snow and ice dams right away. People do not want to pay for something that is going to work in a week, they need the snow and ice removed now. When it gets real cold, and lot's of snow, the ice dams can form in a couple of days. And the snow can be drifted to 2 - 3' in one storm. The only thing that will do the job is the good old roof rake.
Lot's of work, but that is what it takes.

I am SWAMPED in the winter ! ! !

I sent myself to the CSIA Chimney Sweep School in Indiana and became a Certified Chimney Sweep. The best thing I have ever done in my life ! ! ! Spring and Summer is booming with roof washes and decks..... Fall and Winter with chimney sweeps and repairs....

Money in the bank, presents under the tree... and a smile on the wife's face.... all is good !

For anyone who is "sqeaking by" in the winter..... maybe this is an option ????
