zinc strips work wonders! The only problem is that they only work in the immediate area(s) 4-5 feet on either side, and then the rest of the roof looks horrible once the algae recurs. Pass on this, and don't think twice.

 I think you are making a very important clarification. If we use the mantra "scam, scam, scam" and then homeowners  look around their town and see clean spots beneath vents etc they are going to be confused at best and think we're liars at the worst. clearly zinc does something to inhibit algae growth but it is not a satisfactory solution.
