We're about to attempt a roof cleaning with a off-the-shelf product at a clients request. He's 70+ years old, and not comfortable with chlorine on the roof of the home that he built, so he asked me if I'd use the stuff he bought.  I'm not about to try and change the mind of a 70+ year old man, so we'll give it the college try.  He's agreed, that if it doesn't work, then he'll have us do the job our way.

Even if we end up doing it twice, his price stays the same.  Gotta take care of those elders.  And frankly, I'm curious if the stuff works.  We'll be using the Cleaner Today QSE powder.  Who knows......  We'll find out Thursday.

Ted, That stuffs runoff is Dark Brown....Which lead me to believe I was stripping away asphalt from the shingle when I rinsed...(you have too rinse this product). I would decline if he didn't want to you to use the
recommended way.

I know he is older but i would tell him you researched it and it would be a bigger problem than it's worth......

JMHO Tho, tell him to get his money back on the crap!!

@Dave - do tell bud.

@Will - thanks man.  I just feel horrible trying to force my will on an elderly person.  As soon as I see the brown runoff that you mention, I'll quickly point it out and try to guide a quick and proper decision from him.

you have to rinse that stuff off with a power washer or you will see no results. Good luck. I would just kindly explain to him that you are the professional and you have the experiance and knowledge to get the job done right and the last thing you want to do is power wash his roof and cause any damage. I understand your compassion but sometimes you need to use your judgement and maybe go against what the consumer says.

QSE is sodium hydroxide based. It's gonna give terrible brown runoff and will require alot of rinsing. Worst of all you will have to use pressure to remove any heavy algae.

Sodium hydroxide is often used as a degreaser, so I can't see it being a good product for asphalt shingles. Sodium hydroxide is also an active ingredient in most paint strippers, so be careful with overspray.

Thanks guys - Diamond and Cheasapeke.  I had no idea it was sodium hydroxide based. I'll be a bit more convincing with him now that I know that.  I really appreciate, and my Senior Citizen client doesn't know it yet, but he appreciate it too!

To me, THIS is what the RCIA is all about. Folks helping each other out. If I can return the favor, you know where to find me.

NEWS from CPSC

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission

Office of Information and Public Affairs

Washington, DC 20207

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT: Ken Giles

June 7, 1995

Release # 95-130

CPSC And Jomaps Announce Recall Of M-1 Deck & Roof Cleaner

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Jomaps Inc. of Alpharetta, Ga., is voluntarily recalling approximately 14,000 quart and 11,000 gallon sizes of their M-1 Deck & Roof Cleaner. The product, which contains high levels of sodium hydroxide, was not packaged in accordance with the Federal Hazardous Substances Act.

The product, which can cause severe burns to the skin and eyes, lacked necessary warning labels, cautions for use, and guidelines for appropriate first aid in the event of an accident. To date, Jomaps Inc. and CPSC have not received reports of accidents or injuries associated with the deck and roof cleaner. The company initiated the recall after CPSC laboratory analysis showed that the M-1 Deck & Roof Cleaner had high levels of sodium hydroxide.

The M-1 Deck & Roof Cleaner was sold from March 1994 to March 1995 at Home Depot stores nationwide and at a few small paint stores. The liquid cleaner, which sold in one-quart plastic bottles for about $5 and in one-gallon cans for about $21, was packaged with a yellow and red label that read in part "M-1 Deck Roof 'CLEANER'...Concentrate... Cleans & Restores...DANGER Eye & Skin Irritant...See additional cautions on back panel." Captioned photos of cedar shake shingles, a treated pine deck, and an asphalt shingle roof appear on the front of the label.

Consumers should immediately discontinue use of the item and return it to the store where purchased for a full refund. For more information, consumers should call Jomaps Inc. toll free at (800) 966-6175 for more information.

Jomaps Inc. has altered the packaging to comply with the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. Products with the new label are currently sold in stores.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is still interested in receiving incident or injury reports that are either directly related to this product recall or involve a different hazard with the same product. Please tell us about your experience with the product on www.saferproducts.gov

CPSC is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with the use of the thousands of consumer products under the agency's jurisdiction. Deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product incidents cost the nation more than $900 billion annually. CPSC is committed to protecting consumers and families from products that pose a fire, electrical, chemical, or mechanical hazard. CPSC's work to ensure the safety of consumer products - such as toys, cribs, power tools, cigarette lighters, and household chemicals - contributed to a decline in the rate of deaths and injuries associated with consumer products over the past 30 years.

Under federal law, it is illegal to attempt to sell or resell this or any other recalled product.

To report a dangerous product or a product-related injury, go online to: www.saferproducts.gov, call CPSC's Hotline at (800) 638-2772 or teletypewriter at (800) 638-8270 for the hearing impaired. QSE is why I am now a non pressure softwash roof cleaning company! I bought into the 'business in a box' song and dance and then when I actually applied it, and nothing happened except brown stains running a few inches down the roof, I gave it one more good effort with a 'gentle' scrubbing... Next step, pressure washing--no I have been in the construction industry long enough to know that was not the answer. So, I went to the worldwide web and stumbled into a small group of folks who seem to have a story to tell. RCIA is blessed with men and women of integrity and years of experience to back it up. Thanks for being here.

I give them credit though, they seperated me from my money and true to their word, I have a business in a box-- in a corner of my shop to remind me that just because a company is brilliant at marketing, does not mean they care about their customers. Maybe I should be thankful their business in a box is full of junk.

I completely understand trying to help out our seniors but there is a point where we need to be proactive and find a way to explain that what they want done is not the right way or the right product. I've dealt with that for many years with so many different things.

I too was one who bought the product and when it arrived I boasted that my product arrived. Many people chimed in and one I remember was Mike D. telling me what I had so I returned it and got a full refund.

I hope you can get through to him that this is not what he wants on his roof!

I thought about that very thing Kim!  (Great minds, as they say!)

@Aaron - no worries, as I'm not one to be 'silly' about much of anything.  No commitments were made, except for if it's done my way, the right way.  Then and only then, guarantees will apply.
