Help - Protecting a wood deck
Permalink

I need some help on this one.

My customer is asking the roof be cleaned and they have a big deck in the back that is old and full of algae. They have no gutters and I can not sell them a deck cleaning.

What do you think?

Tarp it? Give them a free deck wash? Keep it irrigatated during the entire roof cleaning?

At this point, I'm thinking of just giving the deck cleaning away for free because they are not budging an inch and the deck has a thick layer of algae on it!

(I request that this remain on the open side. Info like this keeps new people coming to this site.)

Hey Ray,...if it is more than an hours worth of work I would just wet it first and tarp it. If it can be done in an hour or less, then doing a freebie wouldn't be a bad idea,..and would also make the whole job look better. I do free concrete alot. Also depends on the attitude of the customer. If the deck is in rough condition aside from the algae,..then I'd just tarp it. Don't get your self into where you're having to go back and sand a feathered up deck.

Depending on how much you are getting from them job, it may be a good idea to go ahead and just do it.

cleaning the deck sounds like it would be a good idea just make sure you take before and after pics also make sure they know you are doing it for free sounds like that deck needs to be resealed and you dont want to end up doing that for free also

I'd clean it myself. The PR from it is worth alot. Alternative is wet it down , tarp it and have a nice day.

Decks are no problem, Get a rotating sprinkler on about ten min b4 you start keep it on till the end.....no problems. When you turn sprinkler off rinse down deck with nozzle pray { easy pressure } and your good as gold!

Ya, what he said.

But, if you can afford to throw it in, it might get you a tip or at least a recommendation?

I would be VERY CLEAR that you can make it clean, but it really should be sanded and sealed etc after.

You don't want to do a free deck cleaning and then have them say "It looks like bare wood now and we are not pleased"

I guess you better Wet it, tarp it, flood tarp, rinse tarp, fold tarp, put tarp away, collect check, { maybe take a leak at this point? } on to next job.

Actually Ray, if you clean it for free and they are impressed with the results, you do have a chance of recouping costs with a sealing/sating job after the free cleaning, if they want to keep it looking pretty....

Thanks for all the imput guys! (all great ideas and solutions)

I'm going to take everyones advice and bundle it into one. Wet the deck, tarp under the overhang/drip line and PW the deck when finished with the roof. (The tarp should help in protecting blotching the wood from the roof mix.)

Ray...I'm not big into deck sealing/staining so if I get any calls for deck cleaning/sealing/staining I will give them your number without a doubt!
