I washed a few decks this weekend, the first one was just a strip/clean and it had a little mold, but nothing major. It seemed to come off fine along with the previous sealer.
The 2nd deck was unsealed and was built in 2005. So, it's been 6 years without any type of protection. The railings came out great, but there is deep mold in a lot of the floor boards that I just can't seem to get up.
My helper went to mix sodium percarbonate to apply, but ended up spilling it all over the wet ground, so I went to the store and purchased the closest thing I could find, which was Thompsons Oxy Foaming Action or something like that. It's a Sodium Percarb cleaner, but I'm not sure how much or if it is comparable to the Sodium Percarb that I purchase from my chem supplier?
I tried several things to remove this from the wood, but nothing was successful. Against my better judgment, I even tried a solution of bleach, soap, and water on some of these areas to see if that would do the trick, nothing, it didn't even budge.
I have a picture to show what I am referring to. The deck looks much much better, but this deck cannot be sealed with any mold showing like this, right? This picture shows the worst spot, but since I spent so much time trying to remove all of this deep mold, I seriously lost my tail on this one.. Now I have to go back when I figure out a better method to remove it before any sealing can be done.

Hmm, that wouldn't be good. However, if I scratch at the surface, it does seem to come off (in the other sections where the green was more on the surface.
Ray, I tried something like that once and the results weren't good for me, but there are plenty of others that use SH on wood without any issues.

SH is not fine! From the picture it looks like maybe a grill was sitting there. But you can only see so much from a picture. Have you tried a sander? Make sure the wood is dry first.

I tried about a 6% solution, but didn't feel comfortable using it based on everything I had read.
I went back to this house today armed with new knowledge from the guys who PM'd me and the green was completely gone... I was quite surprised, but I didn't believe it when the homeowner told me this. Maybe it was the final spray with oxalic acid that brightened everything up before I left? Besides sanding in a few spots where the wood furred, the deck is ready for sealing.
Thanks for all of the help from the guys who PM'd me and chimed in here.

Thanks, Brett. It was a relief since I was prepared to go toe to toe with that deck again, but was pleasantly surprised. I'm very new to cleaning wood, but I like the challenge that they provide.
