Anyone else have an issue with their Homeowners Association not wanting their vehicle parked at their house or even close to it?
I got the sticker on my window yesterday that tells me that I cannot park my truck at my house and if I do, it will be towed at my expense. They then say on this sticker that I can park on the main street.. This makes no sense because then EVERYONE would see my truck. However, I will not park my truck there. I have worked way too hard to have all of my stuff stolen out of the back of my truck!
I don't understand why this rule even exists for those with some lettering and a ladder on their truck. I keep my skid/trailer in the garage out of sight and park my truck with a tank, a pump, and a ladder in my driveway, yet this is now a probably after living here for 1.5 years! I don't make any noise, ever, and don't do anything to disrupt my neighbors. This is just a crock, IMO.
I am really furious right now and unsure of what to do about this. Anyone have any suggestions from dealing with their own HOA?

Phil - chaces are, there's no beating the HOA. You likley signed a document agreeing to all of the rules, and future amendments, at closing. I pay $100 a month to park my business truck at a storage facility as a result of those same rules, AND county rules as well. At least where I'm at.
Yeah, I am sure I signed something, it just seems like they are kicking a large majority of the community right in the gonads. This wasn't enforced last year and I use this vehicle to get to and from work every day. This just puts us in a huge bind.

If its in your driveway and its not parked "permanently" there, then there shouldnt be a problem. I know the rules change drastically from place to place, but I was on the board of my HOA for a year and understand the rules pretty well. If your bylaws say "No lettered trucks" or "No trucks with ladder racks" or something along those lines, then you dont have a choice. But if t doesnt say those things, as long as you're not parked in the street you should be fine and Id fight it.
It won't fit in the garage and that is where I store my pressure washing rig. What if I cover up the lettering? I wish they would have put a contact name or number on this sticker because I need to call them. The number on the HOA packet leads to NO WHERE, it is out of service. What a joke. There is overflow parking, and I park there all the time. I just don't understand what the big deal is. Anyone know why they care so much about some lettering and a ladder?

Scott, besides one day on the weekends, the truck is almost always gone until the late evening. I didn't see anything in the packet about commercial vehicles, but a lot has changed in our community since we moved in.
Since I can't get in touch with these people, I don't even know what they have a problem with, other than they said it is a commercial vehicle.

It's Tanyard Springs HOA, and we live in Glen Burnie, MD, but the packet that we received upon closing in 2009 has a number that is completely turned off. I called it as soon as I saw the sticker on my truck. There is a clubhouse that has an office with a lady from the HOA working in there, so I was going to stop in there right after work today. Working with her in a past has proven to be stressful because she is a mean old bat, so I'm sure this will be the same.

Phil - I forgot to mention; I've given 'good deals' to most of the HOA directors, AND I recently did our own clubhouse/pool house roof as a community service gesture. I even gave a good deal to the property managment EVP who also lives in my subdivision.
Long story short, I leave my BIG company truck at the house overnight on occassion, and no ones says a word Then again, my immediate neighbors are all great folks which helps too.
Does the truck have commercial plates? That could be it, i know some HOA that have that. Maybe the association didnt do it since it may not exist anymore....maybe it bugs someone who has extra stickers from the time it did. Before you say anything to the old lady see if it is still up and running. Good Luck.
You are going to fight a losing battle there in Tanyard springs , the community is too new , the developer still has a whole lot af say since the community isnt completed. The only thing you can do is un letter your truck , they have no say about the canoe rack that also can hold ladders . Try but you wont win. My hoa says no business vehicles , but what the association didnt realize is that their rules stop at the curb , my road is a county street as long as the truck is under 10k gross I can park it on the street IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE I bring utility bodies , vans , and pick ups home all the time . I have recieved violation notices and been told they will take me to court , I then informed them that there were 4 real estate agents and 1 insurance agent with lettering on their cars that would have to be moved if I had to move . They voted to change the rules . Mainly because the vice president was real estate agent with one of the cars , believe it or not they wanted to argue that cars were different since they werent contractors , they were licensed professionals .
Oh by the way when you bought your house over there did they tell you about the chemical waste dump on Solley road about 1/8 mile away from you ? I see you have a young one , do a bit of reasearch on that old waste dump Go drive solley road , right by the junk yard , that hill behind the fence is an old chemical waste dump .
I had a problem with my HOA just a few months ago. They said that my trailer(old back up) that was in MY GARAGE was a commercial vehicle and that it could nt be there.....My warehouse was full and i just had in in our garage... There are 3 county sheriffs that park their police cars in their driveways in my neighborhood, but they are county employees and they are different I am told.......BS its still in may garage...I fought them for a month till they shut up.

You need to find out if they changed the by-laws since you moved in. If they have get a copy of the new ones and carefully read through them paying attention to every detail. A lot of times the commitees try to get away with more than they are allowed. HOA's can really be a pain sometimes and have the ability to fine and lien your property.
The neighborhood I grew up in was very picky. They wouldn't allow pickup trucks or work vans at all unless it was in the garage. They tried fining my parents for having a minivan kept in the driveway, said it was classified as a van, which in their mind is for commercial use. Anyway, my mom found out that minivans are classified as station wagons and fought them on it and won. So sometimes you can win in a HOA battle.
Thats why I could never live in one and thought I bought in an area where I can do whatever I want, but I was wrong. I have code enforcement all over me because some neighbor has nothing better to do than take pictures of my house and report me to the county. Code enforcement told me I can not park my trailer out FRONT OF MY HOUSE IN MY DRIVEWAY because I have a business license to my home address and there is equipment on the trailer. But if I worked for a company and brought their truck and trailer home than that would be OK. WHAT KIND OF CRAP IS THAT???
Sorry for rant but I am still annoyed by them and had to vent a little. Apparently your not safe anywhere unless you build a 10ft concrete wall around your house, which I might do.
