I have been asked about 2 pictures others here have seen posted.

Others would like me to explain how I can remove rust like this.

I've done this for the past 20 years or so.

I tried the store bought "Rust Removers" and they just are not strong enough and waste a lot of $.

This is something to start off with overly cautiously and NOT FOR A HOMEOWNER. We, as professional roof cleaners are used to spraying chemicals. Homeowners will almost certainly do themselves or their home damage!

Done unprofessionally, you can do instant damage that can not be easily repaired!

I have never, after doing hundreds of these, had a single problem-but I remain cautious in my application!

With pressure washer in hand or garden hose, put a 50/50 mix on up to 100% of Muriatic or Hydrochloric Acid on the rust with a pump up garden sprayer made for acid or just a $10.00 cheapo garden sprayer that if you rinse well, may last 2 or 3 jobs.

{ The need for over a 50% mix is rare and would only be used if the 50/50 mix was not sufficient the 1st time and the wall was still wet from rinsing}

It takes getting used to about how quickly to get the acid right back off.
Some I may leave on 30 seconds and some 3-5 minutes, you just have to watch that it's not removing anything but rust!
Don't catch a breath of it and don't let it touch a plant.

Rinse it off.

If it's not completely removed, put more on and watch it even more closely, until it's gone.

These photos of my son pressure washing, had me behind with the acid and camera.

It works wonders on house walls etc, but is seldom totally successful on flat concrete, like driveways.
The rust penetrates flat cement too deeply. But it improves it and occasionally totally removes it!

Chuck

Hey Chuck, would this work well on removing rust from siding or would it be too strong? I just got a call for removing rust from siding and I will be taking a look on Monday.

Thanks and great pics and info!

Phil, I saw your question in the school yard reguarding what I used to remove the rust from the concrete walks.

I used Oxalic Acid on that one. The whole job used up an entire 50lb bag. There was A LOT of rust everywhere and the thing is, once you begin spraying to remove it off concrete you have to spray it evenly on ALL of the concrete to blend it in. It can be a real PITA but the $$'s to remove Rust can be pretty good if priced right.

It will work fine on all siding- even aluminum, BUT- you have to be ready to rinse it off as soon as it goes yellow or disappears. If you leave it longer, it starts eating most all surfaces, except most plastics.

You might want to try 25% and work your way up to what you are comfortable with?

It's cheap and easy to try and within 1 minute or so, you will see how well it's working for you.

I started out using oxylic acid, but it's too slow and costly.

If fumes are no problem, use cheap muriatic acid-but the smell is a killer until it's rinsed!

If you don't want the excessive fumes, use sulferic acid. It's a bit slower, but fast enough and still cheap enough!

Chuck
