dan you created your own worst nightmare. But the fact is 250 is a price that you have and do charge for homes that are well worth 600. I know this for a fact. So Basically what im saying is you need to raise your prices and stop short changing yourself and south jersey. Stop giving away jobs for 250 or less and start setting the bar higher. People will pay for great service. Trust me.

At $150 a roof I'd subcontract to him. If you trained him & he does a good job, have him do your first few jobs of the week while you do all the others. You charge the customer full price, pay him $150 and pocket the rest. The price stays in the good range & everyone goes home happy. He owns his own business (even if he is still working for you).
Here's your answer above ..patrner up with the guy to help get him started. This will open you up to concentrate more on sales.

If you got a guy that seems to have a lot of ambition he may not be the guy for you. As most off you know i was a tree guy for a long time and i kept one of my guys with me. TREE WORK IS HARD we all can agree. Now this guy watched me doing the roof cleaning thing. not only did he watch the prossess he learend all my talent on how to sell it.
HE has no kids and is not maried, lives with his father. his father bought him a nice box truck there is no doubt in my mind he will do roofs for $150- $250 and why not he dont care if he can make $500 a week in 10 hrs why not?
now this guy lives right down the street and will do every thing that i would at a lower price. and all his family is in the real estate biz, so here comes the old fraze
its not what you know its who you know AND IM PISSED OFF!
MY ??? IS SHOULD I BE MAD or just let it go?
I'm trying to think of how many times I have posted "I DO NOT WANT TO BE AN EMPLOYER" I started in 1978 as a painting contractor and pressure cleaned as paint prep and did a few roofs. In 1988 I moved to Florida, started my painting business and quickly added Pressure Washing, as a seperate business, in 1991 I started No Pressure Roof Cleaning. Until 1994 I hired people to work for me. That year my son started working for me and it became Father & Son ONLY and stayed that way! However, from 1978 to 1994 I trained lots of guys who then competed with me at cheaper prices! Most failed, but as of this date, I have one major competitor, that I started in business. Hoover Pressure Cleaning. John Hoover was and is my friend, he was a go getter like I never saw before! I started him out by giving him the Veranda Inn in Englewood,Fl and sold him 2 pressure washing machines. Within maybe 5 years, he had a larger business than me! Of course, his work area encompassed 5 x what I care to cover. A few years ago [not sure how many?] he sold the business and now I have "self created" serious competition! More than anyone else, when I bid a job, I hear Hoover Pressure Cleaning says they can do it for X amt of $. So, I have to cut my price. Now, to be honest, they are not generally lowballers-just competition! After 31 years in business, I HAVE LEARNED THAT LESSON! No more employees!!! Chuck Bergman

This last year I have had to "sell myself" as a professional to customers, because they said they had bids of 5 cents to 8 cents a square ft "under roof"! I can't do 3000 sq ft house roofs for $150.00 to $240.00 Most of these guys advertise "LOW or NO Pressure, but own nothing but pressure washing machines and a long, fake spiel about using the machines downstream chem injector and just rinsing with higer pressure blah, blah, blah. IE: They pressure clean them. I got more $ per roof 10 years ago than I can get now. Chuck

I require my workers to sign layer written non-compete contracts. For two years after they leave me they can not work for or start any company that washes roofs, siding or pressure washes concrete.
