This thread is old. I just wanted to see how you guys feel about AL now 4 years later. And is it worth it? I don't have any AL customers. So I would have to pay for their membership to get reviews on AL. Not sure if I want to go through all the trouble. Looking forward to everyone's point of view.

 IF you want to play the Angie's List Game by advertising on it, here is what we have found. Unless you have nearly perfect reviews, and lots of them, you will be unsuccessful advertising there. Another problem we experienced advertising there was this. The PRICE people paid to get their roofs cleaned is very visible, and we are expensive. This allows customers to shop you, not only on the number of good or bad revierws, but on price as well :( 

 

If a competitor has good reviews, and his average roof cleaning price is lower,  our experiences have shown us that the customer will take a lower priced competitor over you.  So, in effect, we found ourselves "advertising for our competitors" :( 

 

IME, Angies List is a "shoppers dream", because the reviews allow a customer to see not only the quality of the roof cleaning work, by the amount good or bad reviews, but it also allows these shoppers to see exactly how much each roof cleaning company costs :(

 

Our business model is not to clean a lot of roofs, for low prices. We much prefer to take our time, and do less roofs, for more money per roof.

 

Because of who I am, and what we are, I could drop my prices, and easily do twice, or even 3 times the amount of work. In fact, I have people tell me all the time "Chris, if you will just meet Joe Competitors lower price, you can clean our roof". Most of the time, I simply say "NO". 

I know quite a few people who get plenty of work off Angies List, we are not one of them. Our roof cleaning prices  are higher, sometimes nearly double what some of our competitors charge. The Angies List shopper has no "reason" to call us, when a local competitor has as many or more good reviews, and is 1/2 our price.

Not saying I  condone this Bruce, but I know a roof cleaner who gets a lot of work from Angies List, and this is how he did it. He joined Angies List as a member, mainly to keep an eye on his reviews. Then, he bought 6 memberships for friends and family, with a different last name then his. He told me that if youi are a member, they will give you a discount on Gift Memberships. He told me he bought 6 Gift Memberships for 180.00.

Then, he had all these friends/family of his leave great reviews that he actually typed out. All these people also posted reviews of other places too, so it was not Obvious.  These 6 great reviews he said "earned" him the Super Service Award, and he says he really get a TON of business off Angies List. 

He also "buys" reviews from his Customers like this. He will offer to clean a driveway or pool cage for free, in exchange of a great review. 

His website is poorly ranked in his local area, but he is so busy, and all of it from Angie's List. 

 

Again, I do NOT Condone this crap, and IMHO Karma will catch up with him someday. I only post this to show our Roof Cleaners how Easy it truly is, to artificially manipulate Angies List. 

And, for any and all of our roof cleaners who Won the Super Service Award the right way, hats off to you
