Chris I've heard Fla produces some wicked black roofs. Why is it you guys don't get a lot of moss? We get some good ones up here. Those big fuzzy moss always reminds me of them pink Hostess Snowballs. I have not yet eaten any moss yet. Maybe this year.

I don't know ED Why we don't get much Moss on Roofs down here in Tampa ? I lived in Seattle back in the 80's, and roof moss was out of control there. Tampa has mostly all Black Algae or Green Mildew staining our roofs here. Roof Moss is nasty stuff, and left unchecked can actually spread the shingles. I have a friend back in Seattle who is hooked up with several roofing contractors there. He sprays roofs to prevennt and kill the roof moss, keep that stuff under control! Some People here in Tampa have us spray their roofs on a yearly basis, to prevent the black streaks on roof from coming back.
Maybe moss actually likes cooler damp conditions than Florida usually has. Because here in Central, Pa th roofs get thick like carpet with moss. But that is only in the wooded areas,..but even if a single tree overhangs a house,..there will be moss and lichen growth. Maybe our cool damp seasons are longer than Fla?
They say moss grows on the north side of trees,..maybe because it's cooler and damp on the north side?
But in all reality,..I haven't a clue,...just throwing out possible factors.
Yes, when I lived in Seattle, moss was really bad. The NW has cool, damp conditions year round, with nearly everyday rainfall. Perhaps you are right, the heat here in Tampa controls the roof moss a bit ? We do get Lichens here in Tampa, just not a lot. Lichens are best killed, and allowed to simply fall off the roof with rain. Our roof cleaning solution kills the Lichens, and soon after they disappear. Roof Moss is nasty stuff as you know, and must be removed if bad, or it will open roofing shingles up like a sandwich.
That is a great roof cleaning job completed by Apple Roof Cleaning in Tampa Florida. I like how all those ugly black stains comprised of Gloeocapsa Magma were cleaned with a safe Non Pressure cleaning process that is used by Apple Roof Cleaning there in Tampa Florida.
