having trouble finding out the square feet of these two story roofs. can anybody help please. because every level is a differant size really need to be able to find out total roof square feet.
Go to the property appraisers website and look up the property. There should be information for sq. footage of the building. Subtract the 2nd story sq. footage from the total sq. footage and that will get total under the roof. Add a factor for pitch and your are there.

Estimate... use the eve line to judge the heigth of the peak. The more you do the less the pitch will be a factor. It's more of, Walkable or Not Walkable.
You should be able to go to your local roofing supply house and get a see thru guage. It is clear plastic with angled lines. You basically look at the rake of the roof , match it up then look at the corresponding angle. That will be your pitch.
Count the shingles going up the roof and multiply them by 5 then divide by 12. Then walk off the length.
How this works:
Your average asphalt shingle roof has 5" of shingle exposed so when you count the shingles you are actually counting 5" sections. So if you see 36 shingles and multiply by 5 for a total of 180, you now know there are 180 inches of exposed roof shingle. Now when you divide that number by 12 to get 15 you now know that you have 15 feet up the roof. You can test this assumption that the shingles are 5" exposed by taking a tape measure on the next roof you clean and you will see the result. Of course this only really works for asphalt shingles.
For the second number you walk off the length. Take a yard stick or 3 feet on a tape measure and see how large of a step you have to take to get 3 feet. When you get used to taking a 3 foot step, this is called walking off the footage. If you take 20 steps than you have a 60 foot length.
Now if you take the 60 feet and multiply by the 15 feet you have the square footage of 900. In roofer terms this would be 9 square as a square in roofing terms is one hundred square feet.
You can also get the length more accurately by using a one hundred foot wind up tape measure or a walking counter measuring device like the ones pictured.
Many guys do adjust their price for steeper pitches to account for time and chemical used managing the runoff. Also if you are not going to walk on the roof the height of the roof will effect your ability to get chem at the peak.
This can work with other shingles as long as you can get the amount of exposed shingle measured in inches. Change the number 5 to the appropriate length and the rest of the equation is the same.
counting shingles might work okay. But, from the ground you might lose sight of each individual shingle. You wanna have some fun? Try counting a three dim. shingle roof from the ground!!

Counting shingles is easiest from standing a the gable end of the roof edge so the only thing your looking at is the profile of the shingle course edges and not the whole shingled roof itself. Usually all my estimating comes from counting shingles, drip edge, fascia, soffit etc. It helps to know the different componets of an exterior and the different sizes each come in.
take square feet of building. If ti is low walkable multiply times 1.2. If it is medium walkable but almost not multiply times 1.4. If it is steep @*$& no im not getting on that multiply by 1.6. Not an exact measurement but good enough for what we do. Ask customer: Mr./Mrs. homeowner how many square feet is your house?
Yeah Im a roofer and I could get real technical but it really isnt necesarry. We dont have to make sure we have enough shingles or something like that.
This question has been answered multiple times, if you use the search button you should find it... go to zillow.com, 9 out of ten times you can get the square footage , appraisers ony add sq ft of heatedspace and normally a basement whether finished or not are below ground which is not added in sq ft add for garage normally 600 sq ft then use the muliplier for the pitch (LINK) http://www.promo-wholesale.com/Upfiles/Prod_r/Roof-Pitch-Guide_20090816080.jpg this will give you total roof sq ft, then add by your price per sq foot
remember if it is 2 stories cut the sq feet in half, you can get a view from bing satalite hope this helps i would book mark the pitch finder or print it my friend all you really neeed is the foot print of the home to get sq footage, finding pitch comes W/ experience

I was going to post almost the same thing Dave. Yes, it has been discussed here more than once in the past 2 - 3 months. I got two clear guides at the HD pro desk.
