We use fall restraint equipment when neccesary. Sometimes shooting from the gutter line just doesn't cut it. Here in MD we have a lot of metal ridge vents with exposed nails that will rust from the treatment. Due to this we have to climb up and inspect the roofs for thes faulty roofing areas in order to protect ourselves, our clients roof and provide thee best possible service.
If the roof is easily walkable; hell yeah I'm walking it. Never had a customer even question me if I was going to walk on his roof. If that's your sales pitch and it works for you than keep it up.
Not us, We walk maybe 10 %. Some we have to in order to get behind dormers and such. It's much safer to stay on the ground or at the gutter line. It takes some experiance but once you get the hang of it you won't use much solution.
I find that any roof under 6/12 is an easy walk and goes much faster. One ladder, one time up, one time down. Never mention if I will or will not get on a roof.
Wow Larry that one picture with the fold out ladder on the second floor, I hope someone held it while you climbed up. If not hats off bud, I would be scared of busting my arse on that one, roof look great though, nice work.

Thats not me it's my helper. Yes I held the ladder. No,, the roof looks like crap. We had not even started cleaning it yet. I didn't include any after pics of any of those roofs. They are all different and just showing that we walk them. I don't recommend anyone doing some of the crazy things we do. Tile roofs can be very dangerous to work on.
I agree with you. We try to shoot from the gutter line as much as possible. Granted, sometimes to hit all the angles you have to get on the roof to get around the dormers, but that still scares the heck out of me, (and I'm not doing any of the shooting).
I also thought that the shingle mfgs. void there warranty if you walk on the roof which could potential lead to trouble especially if you foot print a homeowners roof?
My other reason for shooting from the gutter line is Workers Comp. Your rate is through the roof (catchy isn't it).

We try not to walk on the roof if possible. We use a Genie tow behind 34/20 lift when ever we can or ladders or shoot from the ground. Sometimes you have to get up there.
I prefer spraying from the roof edge. If the mix will readily run then I shoot from the roof edge,..if the mix isn't flowing on it's own,..then I get on the roof.
I prefer shooting from the roof edge because for me it's faster and more relaxed,..the hose isn't dragging over the gutters and it isn't continually fighting to find the ground.
As stated above, runoff isn't even a concern when proper technique is used.
Wind can make this method more of a pain,..but that's one of the reasons I try and do theroofs in the morning hours.
