Hey David, 
Below the text box you type in for the post there is a
check box that says "Attach Files(s)".
-Click on the box and a drop down "File Upload" section will appear.
-Click on the Browse button for "Source File:"
-This will bring up a browse section for your computer, find the file
you want to post and click the "Open" button.
-You can do this for multiple pics if you wish, 10 at a time.
-When you have all the pics selected, you need to click on
the "Upload File(s)" button at the bottom of the "File Upload" section.
You may have been omitting that last step?
-Click on the "Submit Post" button

Go to your home page,(click on your name in log in box). select edit signature. select add avatar, upload file and select save changes.

I think Chris T not to long ago, gave instructions how to put a bCard or picture in the signature area of your post.
