     The loss of prime is probably an air leak on your supply side of the pump. An air leak will cause cavitation in the pump and a loss of prime. Check your fittings, connections, clamps, hoses ect on the supply side of the pump.

Are you pulling from the top? or is it gravity fed from the bottom?

I was pulling from top of the tank. I tested about 50 gal of water through the pump a couple days before and it worked fine. I also ran about the same amount through the pump after I cleaned the roof and it worked fine. I only had a problem with it while I was on the roof. The only thing I could think of was it was having a hard time pumping up to the roof for some reason. I checked for leaks and I found none.

I dont know much about the 5850, does it work fine on level ground? what size hose are you using? what size hose is your intake hose? Im asking you these ?'s , hoping someone will chime in that uses this pump, I use the fatboys and i had this problem once, it was a kink on the intake side of the pump. could be your nozzel, i would start trouble shooting it by taking the nozzel off and seeing if it holds prime. then go from there

I currently use the 5850, fatboy and all flo pumps. I have had the exact problem with my 5850 and an old surflo that I used to use. Each time the culprit was the feed line leaking air. It can seem fine when you first start out, but after the temp increases a little, the connections (usually clamps) loosen up just a little and will start to allow just a tiny little bit of air in the line. This will always cause the problem you are describing.

On another note, Did you prime the hose properly before getting up on the ladder or roof? If there was any air in the pump then, it will have a heck of a time pushing the chem up the hose to 20 to 30 feet. The air compresses and will not allow the pump to push the liquid out.

I'm not with your rig so this is the best advice I can offer you as an outsider looking in.

I should also note that I used to use crimp style clamps on the feed line. They would seem tight in the beginning and then loosen up as the day went on. I now use a hydraulically crimped hose fitting on all of my hoses and never have issues like this any more.

Thanks for the help. I will check my hose clamp to see if it is loose. This was only the second time I've used my pump. All hoses, clamps, etc are new.
I have another house I will be doing for free that has a steep roof. I'm hoping the 5850 will be strong enough to shoot up that high. Do not want to be loosing prime every minute on that job.

This place was done with a 5850. The home was over 10,000 square feet with high, difficult peaks. It tackled it with no problem. It is a good pump and will be capable of doing any roof you need it to.

Wow! Thats a lot of roof. Thanks Brian for the boost of confidence. I have no doubt it will be able to reach, I was just concerned with the priming issue I had on my first roof. I have a 1" intake hose hooked to my pump and I have not been able to find a air leak anywhere. When the hose was on the ground it worked fine. The whole time I was up on the roof, it would lose prime every minute.

Nice work Greg the roof looks great. I have not encountered the draw problem you are having with my fatboy. Sounds like a hose issue of some sort.

My intake hose is new and its not perfectly round. Its a little on the flat side. . I'm thinking this may be the problem. Maybe the flow is being restricted because of this?

Is it connected to PVC pipe? then inserted in tank or is just a hose in the tank ? if you just have the hose in the tank, try connecting it to 3/4 pvc pipe

Flattened hose and adding 3/4 pvc just might do the trick since you can't find any leaks.
