Along the lines of the anticorrosive that Jerry mentioned the following is excellent at destroying rust:  http://www.amazon.com/Permatex-81849-Rust-Treatment-10-25/dp/B000BKC25K

I've used the brush on version before with great success.  I'm about to treat the surface rust of the truck bed (steel diamond plate) with it prior to a coat of Rustoleum. And the rigid brake lines, drive shaft etc, will get a proactive coating of this stuff once in a while too.

This should work wonders on the rust on steel trailers caused by SH or just moisture in general.

Another safety item for when you need to walk on a shingle roof is investing in the proper shoes.  These shoes will not slip on the shingle which gives you a very safe feeling.  We are cleaning a lot of roofs that are 8/12 or steeper but we do everything we can not to walk on the customers roof due to safety for our crew members plus every step on the shingle is nocking some of the grandular off the shingle.  However, we have invested in Cougarpaws a duraflex leather roofing boot that also has a replacement cougar paws multi-purpose traction grip replacement pads.  I wear size 12 of their model code CPRB that cost $116.36 which included tax.  Note their website.  I feel this safety item is well worth the investment.

My experience with cougar paws in the past were that they were great on dry roofs but very slippery on roofs with SH on them.

Are the replacement pads something that you wear over the boot's soles or replacements for when the soles wear out?

Marcus,

Look @ the Cougarpaw link, the part # CPMP is a valcro strip that replaces the whole bottom of the shoe, $14.95.  My suggestion is don't walk on the wet shingles if you must walk on the roof work from the bottom up & have your ladder placement where you have not sprayed on the shingles to get down.  This would eliminate slipping off the roof plus give the shingles better protection from your steps.

Well I have a substantial amount of experience walking / inspecting steep roofs. I have a company that inspects ALL of Liberty Mutuals steep / 2 story roofs in the Houston region. I often times inspect 8-10 roofs a day and everyone of them is usually at least 10/12 and up.
I wear my cougar paws more often than anything else when its dry. However by chance I found these shoes to work as well if not better than my paws on a damp surface. They are $14.99 at Academy and the're white they won't however offer protection from the SH which is the major drawback to them. They are Ralph Lauren boat shoes, they have a honeycomb type of flat sole. The link is below. I never would have thought these would have been good on the roof but I swear I can walk a 10/12 with these on with no problems.

If anyone needs assistance on steep roof training, best ascenders, rope etc I'm more than happy to help.

Sounds like you may be a candidate for a guest speaker on the radio show when the topic is safety and roof walking. Interested?
Gary

Chris,
You really should start a thread entitled "MSDS Sheets".  That is a great post and it will get lost in this 3 page thread. Good information for premium members.

Thanks Guys, I'm glad I can help out.
I started a new thread called "SAFETY TIPS"
with these and a few extras. I am hoping we can
make that thread a STICKY and everyone can keep adding
safety tips, Roof walking, DOT, Chemical etc. etc.

GARY: Can we make that THREAD a STICKY, to
be our official SAFETY reference till the new site
redesign?

Thanks

Chris

New Helpful hint for Northern areas...

Do not spray roofs in the winter it does not work out so well. Its nice that you don't need to worry about  the over spray but its not worth the hassle.

Simple cost effective idea we used this summer on houses without gutters to catch most of the run-off.   wink

There are a lot of great tips in here for sure. I can attest to the awesomeness that is the Cougar Paw Boot. I always keep them in the back seat for those steep roofs. We do a lot of roof installations, and without these boots I am very comfortable on steep roofs. With them I am just as comfortable but I am also a lot safer!
They take some getting used to but are well worth the money.
