Think over what is in this PM. Do we really want to help non-paid members when they won't help RCIA? think this over and let your actions show it. Gary
I am so with you guys on the paid member thing! Here is a note I sent to Chris and am sending to you too esp. after seeing MJ Fulton beg for friends on his FB page. Again, if I'm wrong and he's a paid member (has been a member of the site longer than I) then I'll eat my words. This is another thing that needs to be discussed and all the paid members need to agree upon. If you won't pay to join, esp. after that long of a membership, no need to support things like FB. Another carrot to put in their faces.
Pasted text:
A few paid member thoughts.
I was going to contact Mike Fulton in Charlottesville, about 30 mins. from me and where my customer base is from my remodeling to network and see if we could work out a way to "work together" and not step on each others toes. Then I didn't see the dollar signs next to his name and thought, "Why should I go the extra mile to work with a non-paying member?" Now, maybe I'm not doing something right and he is a paid member but I don't know how to check that status. So my mind worked a little and I thought the carrot for those who are on the fence would be a better networking relationship and better ways to work together. How to actually word it?
I agree whole heartedly however in defense of mjfulton he just posted yesterday that he was absolutely becoming a paid member and said it was on his list of things to do. I hope he backs up his post with the fees and I personally will give the guy the benefit of doubt until he proves otherwise. This is just my opinion but in many instances the "hard sell" approach may be turning people off. I think it may be slightly childish to say I'm not going to "like" you because you haven't paid yet. Yes I liked his facebook page but he in return also "liked" mine without me asking anything in return. I want to see this organization grow big and strong and I just don't agree that slamming the door in peoples faces is the correct way of going about it. We're roof cleaners, not an elite club of snobs.
Chris, I don't think it is really a hard sale or snobs. These guys who built RCIA put a lot of time and expense into doing so to better the industry. The only way we can make it to the next step is to get the membership dues in and eventually give RICA some real credibility. If we can say we have 1000 paid members versus 1500 members on a blog, it makes a real difference. I have nothing against MJ or anyone else who is or isn't a paying member, I just feel that those of us who are paying need to do something to encourage those who don't, to do so. There was a post the other day about the fine line and the carrot, this is part of that. There has to be a reason other than supporting RCIA to pay dues and become a paid member. I hope all of this makes sense...

It makes sense but like I said the guy posted just yesterday about becoming a paid member. That needs to be encouraged and not scolded for not having done so yet on an open forum.
And if I may make a suggestion; we have "guests" posting in there states "certified" roof cleaners directory, that should be what's shut down quick until dues are paid. Those are the people I personally view as ones that are using the board to their full advantage while not having given back via dues etc.

I agree totally. Just need some more approval from other people.
I found the post you referenced.
Just to "man up" and not be a "childish 65 year old" I went in the open section and deleted mine and Brett's post. We'll see what happens. Anybody taking bets?
Yes I do the hard sell, mainly because I am sick and tired of the People coming on here, STEALING info and using it to cut our throats. There are people on here that have developed businesses doing over $100K a year and refuse to give a measly $100.00 back to the place where they got their start. I hope they burn in hell along with all their money. I am ususally not like this, but I am just sick and tired of freeloaders. Gary
Wow.... Rcia fed these people for to long and information is still available for free. You have to weigh the options of Rankings Vs Establishing a strong org. Then limit the guests to what they can see and post. (There are many ways to restrict without hurting rankings to much and such)
I have to agree that pushing a hard sell might not get more paid memberships. Theres other ways to accomplish it without pushing to hard. Take the toys away... For example; any new member that joins should only be able to read certain areas and not post. Guests can not click links or see pictures. Guests can only read original post and not responses. Guests can not upload pictures or use links in signature. Put a certification plan in place (must be paid member to apply), businesses in the Certified Roof Cleaners section will be displayed with business info only no pictures unless paid member. Many options..Etc. There's a lot of ways to accomplish more members without sticking it down there throats. Most see and know about the paid membership area and won't join because they will still use the forum like they have been.
The easiest solution would have been all cert's expire 12/31/10 only paid members may renew. An quick easy solution for now, guests can not post/have active links or pictures and links not available.
Take some food away and they will join. Yes, It will piss some of them off, but they will return..
If the platform can't handle certain things to restrict, its time to change platforms...Get off a hosted platform.
Just a thought.

I agree with so much here.
Any new member that joins should only be able to read certain areas and not post.
(This one came to me as I was driving to pick us SH). Glad to see you post it.

Now, at the same time, I think there is enough information there for anyone with half a brain to put something together w/o any help. I don't have a problem with that. But, all of us know that it's the insight from the guys who have been doing this for a while is what is the meat and what is and can be found by becoming a paid member. Certificates only to paid members. That's an easy solution!

I'm good with these suggestions. My only additional thought is we should have guests have access to a gallery of before & after picutres of ROOFD ( not rigs, etc), this will help us with consumers.
Is anyone familiar with "thegrimescene.com" they seem to have a good handle on a public/pritvate blend, from what I've seen.

Glad to hear that Mr. Fulton got to that list of things to do, I had a feeling he would!

Gary, I have not been here long enough to really feel I have an opinion. I'm happy to be here and learn from everyone and hopefully give some back. The earning potential from this site is phenomenal. Someone to cheap to pay pisses me off. I can only imagine how ticked off you guys are that have been here for years.
