Cleaning the area between roof and top of gutter

On this roof job we cleaned the gutters also.  The area on the facia above the gutters below the shingles was very very cruddy (technical term).  Where the love ran off the roof, it cleaned this area, however not all areas were touched by the love.  I rubbed some of this off with my hand and it came right off.  Not practical to hand scrub the entire length of the house by hand.  I considered a small brush on an extension pole, but also thought it may wash off with rain.  Any thoughts of comments.

Thanks, I love this site.  Been a member about a year, not all that much of a computer dude.  Need to get more involved for the marketing and certifciation aspect.  Built a temporary rig last fall, only done a few roof jobs.  Doing some pressure washing though.  Need more Roof Jobs!!

If I'm understanding the issue,...all you should need to do is mist the untouched areas with the same mix and rinse it off,...maybe I'm not following though. Just make sure to wet the siding down if it's dirty,..or you may risk over spray and cleaning even more of the house.

I was skeptical to spray that surface directly with the roof cleaning chemical for fear of it being too hot a mix for the paint on the gutter and or siding.  Also I sprayed from a higher angle onto the shingle and did not want to freak out the ground man with a massive flow of overspray.

Hitting that area with roof mix is okay, the same with gutters. We use a soft brush on an extension pole to softly scrub this area if necessary. You should be able to control the amount you spray by only opening the valve up a small amount, if you have that sort of set up. Just give the ground man a heads up and then he can follow behind you.

Painted surfaces should hold up to the love. I've never had an issue with that.

Theres a flashing piece often visible from the ground right there. If a proper gutter cleaning is performed before the roof treatment is applied then it shouldnt be an issue. Some times areas like that need extra attention.

Good job catching that, I'm sure you made your customer very happy!

CAUTION: ACHTUNG!: ATTENTION!!

Painted glossy or newly painted surfaces, especially white should be fine.

The chalkier the paint the more susceptible to being removed by the mix, ESPECIALLY if it contains TSP.

We strip painted surfaces for our parent company every week and I use a solution very similar to our roof cleaner for exactly that purpose.

Yes, let me clarify. Do not use TSP and let it dry on paint. But, I never use TSP, so I tend to forget that little nugget of info.

Paint can be affected even without TSP in the mix, been there.Just wet it down really good before spraying even if it runs onto the shingles....you can always let the shingles dry a little but once dry paint gets it.....to late.

Thanks for all of your input, our mix did have TSP in it, I have not ordered any Hang tite yet.
I was not so concerned of it drying since we were very careful about watering. I was wondering if the rain would remove this staining when it drips off of the roof into the gutter. That seems to be the scenario that caused it to get there in the first place isn't it? My thought is to use a brush and wipe it off with an easy swipe. The dirt/debris was loose on the surface after the love ran into the gutter

I got into the habit of always rinsing the gutters and even the lower third of the roof. It's what the ground man does right after he waters the plants and right before he waters the plants, lol.

That area you are talking about is " drip edge" and Love will not hurt it ...

Be very careful with that area of the fascia. You could potentially get things wet that are not supposed to get wet if you know what I mean. Most older houses in my area do not have the proper moisture protection on the eaves/soffits. So just make sure you spray that area with the right angle as to not spay underneath the shingles, and very lightly if you have to.

There are a bunch of great responses here. Good luck with everything Gene! Keep up the good Roof Cleaning and thank you for your brave work as a Police officer.

Here is what I do, since I do not have gutters on most of my jobs, as the love runs off the roof ans into the gutter a good ground guy can hit that section (above the gutter, below the roof) with a water hose and it will spead out the solution and clan it as well. Trust me, let it run in the gutter and hit it with a hose as you go.....I never had an issue yet with those drip edges or strips
