O.k guys I don't know who said it can't be considered littering if it's on private property. well you are misinformed it is littering. Anything discarded without the property owners consent is littering and in Ohio Florida and Pennsylvania this is a large fine. Will you get fined maybe not, but if one homeowner turns you in they will fine you. IT IS LITTERING. It is very easy to look up the laws for individual states. I have ran this idea by my last 5 customers and four of them said you better not throw papers in my driveway. So you guys must live someplace where people don't care if you litter. And I am not on my high horse Scott. We are professionals and we don't litter. Guess what happens when the homeowner doesn't pick up your little baggy? That's right it gets wet and probably lays by the road for days until the state picks it up. We can argue about this forever. Just keep doing it that way and lets see who gets fined first.
Couple of things.
1. It is illegal to solicit door to door in texas without a permit for ever person. This permit has to be obtained for every county you solicit it. We service 6 counties. Thats $300 per person, per county just to knock on doors legally.
2. When you continuously say things like "We are professionals and we don't litter" That implies that those who do use rock flyers are unproffesional, putting you above them, or on your high horse.
Nobody is telling or asking you to use them, but dont say that those who do are unproffesional. It makes you sound like a jackass. But Im just one man talking.
Either way, I like your door to door method. I also like post cards, cold calling, rock flyers, yard signs, bandit signs (Which are illegal in most places too), door hangers (also against the rules in some places), etc....
Point being that no matter what kind of advertising you do, you will have people complaining. I hate junk mail. I hate when someone knocks on the door and sells me. I hate door hangers. I hate all these damn yard signs.
If you shunned every kind of advertising that pissed someone off, you would only be able to drive around in your wrapped truck and hope to get a call.
Oh I agree with you Scott, I hate junk mail, door to door salesman, and especially telemarketing, but that's just me I hate everything except forLori, but not everyone is like me. I often call people and they are generally not sarcastic over the phone like me. lol, I usually say if I wanted your service I would of called you, then I hang up on them.
Just wanted to add one more thing about the postcard and baggy thing. Most people loose or toss out paper ads at some point. But magnets usually, if attractive go up on the frig to hold up things people want to remember daily. Your add will be seen by your prospect as well as anyone who visits their refrigerator. I still have magnets on my frig from years back. I also find it easier to look on my frig then my phone book. I made a lot of money doing this in the maid service industry years ago! I get most of mine from vistaprint.com

lol thats awesome clyde. If I put together a Houston RT , will you make it out in 2011?
absolutely Scott, Texas will be a good one I know alot of you guys which are in that area, I was hoping to of met you in Charleston, I will be there! when do you think you will hold it?
Guys, guys. Lets be productive here. Its been spoken that its quite a different world out there and we need to work together. There was a day when cold calling was innovative, simple truck lettering was genius, God even TV commercial with celebreties smoking cigarettes was ground breaking. Easy does it here and lets just keep finding new ways to market the product. We got a leg up because its still a fairly fresh product and a well needed service. OK I just dumped 3 G's into money mailers for the September month and was able to retrieve half back. Yay. I got desperate because it was slow for a minute. Door to door is not so bad because the product is fresh and most likely needed. I like the bag throwing but it needs work because my bags seem to helicopter down far short of my target. I'm looking into ordering about 200 t-shirts with the co. logo. Half of these shirts will be of the pink persuasion for the ladies. If I get a good response at the door I will follow it up with a free shirt. Who knows where to get the best deal on shirts?

I agree Scott. I am about to litter about 10000 driveways. I have done mailers, and door hangers. I've had good luck with all but mailers. Also speaking of laws regarding throwing fliers in driveways without the owners permission being called littering; if you go door to door and you are on their property without their permission in some states that's trespassing so my question would be is trespassing more professional than littering? Just curious

I think it is littering, but I'll be trying it out this spring.
Think again, you delivered 1200 and you got one call. Thats not a very good percentage. We have always been against this type of advertising.. It is littering and you can be fined up to $5,000.00 . And any RCIA Certified Member that reccomends is crazy. This is not the right way to advertise. ( Sorry Ac ) but in our part of town we would be stuck with tons of fines for littering. BECAUSE THIS IS LITTERING!!! The Benefit is not worth it.

I've touched on this in similar posts, but LSS, I'm with Douglas on this. At least for my area. To each his own - if it works in your region, go for it.
I had MUCH better than the AVERAGE 1% for standard mass marketing by placing our post cards strategically. In fact, the majority of my business in 2010 came from hand delivered post cards. Those that were at the NOVA meeting heard about it. If you're a premium member, and would like to know how we achieved this, PM or call me.
There is a lurker that has copied part of my company name and even my company phone number to a certain extent in my own back yard, so I'm not posting much of anything about promoting one's business in the open. I'll keep additional comments on this to myself, for now......
Demographics very from region to region. As does tolerance, plain and simple. That pretty much sums it up.
Kendrick services, You have a lot to learn if you want to be be succesful in this business, We don't do the rock throwing because it is litterind and we could be fined up to $5,000 per occasion. Stop and think about it. Is it worth it? I know a lot of people inFlorida are promoting it and I think they are doing it because they want less competiton. Think about this method, all it does is p-ss peopke off. Gues what all of a sudden your company is sh-t and the person who told you to do this is doing great because they don't litter. COME ON GUYS THERE IS BETTER WAYS TO ADVERTISE THAN THIS.

I have been in some sort of service business most of my life. When I started out as a 17 year old kid I went door to door with much success but times and people have changed and people around here don't like strangers coming to their door they've become leary. I have had more response with door handers than anything else. However I am not against trying anything new that may work. If I try it and have negative feedback it is out. I don't think I will be branded for life. here there is no competition no one is cleaning roofs in my area. there are a few that will if they stumble across it but as far as I know I am the only one pursuing roof cleaning as a primary service. my biggest challenge is educating the public that it can be done without destroying their roof.
i'm really anxious to try throwing postcards, though i'm not really sure what kind of response i'll get. i'll also be writing down addresses and mailing postcards and eventually going with doorhangers also. www.gotprint.com really does have some good deals. if anyone hasnt' checked them out, they'll send you a packet of their sample products for free and it really is some good looking stuff.

I do NOT want to get into a pissing match with you. BUT, have you ever tried it? If not, you have no idea if they work or not.
I actually hope this DOESNT catch on. Preach on Doug.

Scott, We don't need to go over this again. We don't use this type of advertising in our area, it is against the law and people will turn us in. We made $46,000 in our first few months of business using our methods. And we had no negative reaction to our methods.
Doug do you mind sharing your methods, either here or on the premium side, I mailed out 1000 postcards to homes with dirty roofs and got a zero ROI so I am looking for better ways. I am planning on throwing some postcards, but if you have a better way I'm all ears.

Thats great Doug, and like I said before Its not for everyone. But you can not come here and say it doesnt work if you've never done it. You also cant say people will turn you in as a scare tactic if you've never been turned in or known anyone whos been turned in.
