okay here goes. I called the state to find out what license I needed to be a roof cleaner using a chemical wash. they told me all I needed was a state license and nothing more, and I could powerwash sidewalks and driveways. Okay its been like seven months and no problems, well It appears that other folks or contractors have started turning me in for not having a contractors license. the state( labor and industries)  isued me a 1000.00 dollar fine. I said but you told me I could do this without a contractors license and he replied well now u do. but I called the main office and they said no I dont but I am still getting a fine. any thoughtsfurious

Usually you would need a contractors license, liability and worker compensation insurance but it's according to your state or town codes. I would get the license and then appear in court (if you have to) and then explain it there, bring license and insurance.. Most likely they will lower the fine and issue you a warning. A friend of mine went through the same thing with boiler service. Good luck

Always have to get something in writing because dealing with state or local city employees ranges from experienced to don't care about my job. I live by put it in writing.

Robert - I can't speak for WA, but in VA, a contractors license is needed for a job of $1k or more, and it's spelled out clearly on the web within my county website.  Not really debatable in the Old Dominion State.  From $1k to ? (forgot) you need a Class C.  Bigger jobs a Class B etc.

No disrespect to WA, I wouldn't be surprised if one department was NOT clued in on the other, ie you may be getting railroaded.  Gather your facts online if you can, from WA county sites, then pay the appropriate folks a polite visit, armed to the teeth.  With paperwork!!  smile.gif

Don't let 'em roll you over bud.  Good luck.

BTW - for those of us that DO have a contractors license, it's a nice advantage.
