I am curently paying approx $300 per month in two phone books. It's killing me. There will be a major down grade for me next year. Most people call everybody in the phone book to get the cheapest price.
Jim, Complain to your rep! They are supposed to tell all of their customer about this service. My rep tells me that it is the best service they offer. I tend to agree. I have had mixed results with the ValPak. Some months have been phenominal and some have barely paid for the ad. It seems like the longer you are in the better the results.

The service is great but be careful on which firm you use as recording conversations is illegal unless they are notified or for intent of illegal practices.
Daniel, I wouldn't worry too much about it being illegal. It is not you that is recording the conversation. It is the company that is providing you with the advertising. I can tell you that it is an invaluable tool. You can hear exactly how the person is handled on the phone and it really gives you a mirror to look into if you are the person that is answering the phone calls. The recorded call is usually completely different from how you remember the conversation going. ValPak is the company that I use. There are 3 other companies that I have looked into advertising with that offer the same service.

I wouldn't worry to much either but I would ask the company if they request permission. I have had a lot of experience with recorded calls for sales pitch review. It is great to hear a salesman or youself pitch your services in different environments. It really helps with changing a sales pitch or adapting to different techniques. From experience I have seen companies and there clients sued first hand by abusing it. It's in there term and agreements somewhere.

I did yellow book for 3 years. I didnt know about the internet. I have tried pay per click, paid landing pages (never beat what I could do with website)...Waste of money for me. I've been talking with val pak last few weeks. The art guy does great work. I think, but not sure, that val pack will follow the yellow book? Currently I have an ad on the website of a local tv co. 2 months nothing yet?
What has worked is the website, WOM and repeat customer base. The outdoor signs hasnt gotten me one yet. 2nd time I've tried them.
Another thing that has worked is getting a job in a community that has an online community! Your name will get passed around quick!
The yellow book may work in some areas, but not in mine. Hope this helps and that your ad works for you!! Best wishes! - Mike

Yellow Page reps are all one of a kind. They sell stats and figures and swear by the relevance of this book. How many of us here can honestly say they picked up a phone to search a business or resident in the past 3 years? The careers of the reps are on the chopping block. Place your business in that book if your looking to target the 73-91 year old demographic.
I agree with Ed. I have stopped all yellow page advertising for all of my services. The problem is the other choices are not doing much better. Coupons ng, pay per click ng, direct mail ng. At least your not committing to a 12 month contract with the other stuff and you have more control over timing. I'm finding people are desparately holding on to their $. Be careful with the advertising dollars.
