I do hope you sell that flat surface cleaner and never use it on a roof again, flat surface cleaners are meant for concrete flat work not shingles. As others stated read, also find someone around you that may deal with SH for pools at 12.5 percent. I can tell ya if you have 20 gallons of 12.5% SH, do 30 gls of H20, 16-24 OZ of ammonxy-lo your roof will come out just fine for asphalt shingles. You also can add 5 or 10 more gallons of water to that if it is not to dirty.

Once you get the mix right you will be fine, but do a lot of reading because you have about 3 or 4 different mixes, personnel in virginia beach I mainly deal with asphalt shingles, guys in Florida deal with a lot of tile shingles I believe so there mix maybe a little different, good luck.

well??? maybe i did the math wrong.. i took a 100 gal mix and made it to a 15 gal. mix. or maybe it was the chemicals i got from the store? not sure. I used outdoor SH and H2O, with apple dish soap(Ajax) and some70% ISP.. is that wrong? or does the mix have to be hot ..as in applied hot. i did it cold water and all! Help please i have a big motel job coming up and kinda wanted to use that mix!

In trying to understand your post I think what you are saying is that you think the water has to be hot as in tempature hot, but what you are missing is the word "hot " here means fresh SH, as in a very fresh state. Which is why you are not getting the result you are looking for .

You have spent 6 months and did 50 houses, which you could have done in maybe 3 weeks. So the issue is what posts to read and were to find them.

I will give you some key words to search and then the rest is up to you to piece it together.

Simple just put these words in the search feature and do some reading

terminology

SH

Tools

Insurance

Equipment ( there is a few ways to do a set -up)

Set-up (No to the hot water issue )

safety

run-off

This should get you started and like every one says read and that is because all the info you are looking for is pretty much all here.

Enjoy reading and look for key words and search them until you find all your answers.

Best of Luck

If you are concerned about spending money on 55 gallons of Sodium Hypochlorite with the possibility of it not working, try it this way:

  • Buy yourself a brand new pump up sprayer (you want to make sure it is clean so you don't have any compatibility issues with your sodium hypochlorite). A 2 gallon one will do just fine.
  • Go to your local super market and buy 2 gallons of plain old economy bleach.
  • Add 1.5 gallons of the bleach to your sprayer and .5 gallons of water.
  • Add about 3 oz of Dawn or some equivalent that is NOT ANTIBACTERIAL.
  • Stir the mix
  • Take the sprayer up on the roof, pump up and spray a small section of stained shingles.
  • Watch the algae melt away.

Try it. It won't be a waste of your time or money. You can keep the pump up for demonstrations. It will work. It may take just a little bit longer than our regular mix does, but it will work.

You are looking for about a 4.5% active ingredient of sodium hypochlorite in your final mix for asphalt shingle roofs. Store bought bleach is 6% sodium hypochlorite as an active ingredient. If you mix it the way that I said, it will give you appoximately 4.5% active ingredient. I wouldn't try to clean an entire roof this way, but it will certainly show you that the chemicals and the process works.

Don't add the alcohol to the pump up. It is not necessary and it creates a lot of fumes. After you see the process works and you buy your pumps and tanks, you can add the alcohol to you bulk mix tank and it will speed the cleaning process.

Call your local waste water treatment facility and find out where they buy their sodium hypochlorite from.

As stated, use the search engine it will tell you everything you need to know.  If you follow the RCIA posts you will find the right mix and the proper equipment and techniques to clean a roof.  You will  see results in minutes when cleaning a roof and complete the job in  a very eco-friendly manner.
