Hurricanes - good, bad, ugly?

We're about to get hit with Hurricane Earl up here in Nantucket, what's left of it anyway.  I can't help but think of helpless moss laden turned up shingles that are going to get blown off forcing homeowners to replace rather than clean their roof.

Go further inland .....and it is feeding the moss!

I have sat thru 5 hurricanes/tropical dep. and never lost a shingle.

It may be a good time to hook up with some roofing companies and begin networking.

Many times folks may only need some of their shingles replaced and not the whole roof. This will cause a noticeable difference between the new clean shingles and the old dirty shingles. Cleaning the old shingles will make their entire roof look new... Look at the positive side!!!

Beginning to think that's a necessity.  A fair percentage of the people I talk to have resigned themselves to replacing their roof.  I'd talk them out of it but they often have 25 year old shingles and possible granule loss.  I'm good friends with a carpenter our here and I'm going to start asking the home owners if they'd like a bid.   What would be industry standard here?  a quid pro quo from the carpenter (like roof washing jobs/leads?)  or a percentage?

Two things....I was able to get to homes in today dancing through some drops. The other is I got up on a roof yesterday ready to clean it and realized this roof had so much loss it may really be time for a new roof. I got down and inform the home owner and she thought for a moment and said she was not yet prepared to replace the roof to go ahead and clean it. I think the economy is pushing people more towards a cleaning.

Most of the insurance companies and state Insurance(Like Texas wind storm) are hurting badly and wont replace the whole roof. A hurricane can actually be a blessing when trying to get the word out about cleaning. AC also had a great idea about the shingle repair that was VERY interesting. Ill let him explain.

Just remember all shingles have granule loss and the most loss of all happens in the first 5 years of having shingles installed.

A 25 year warranty is just that-----the manufacturer is so confident that this shingle will last a minimum of 25 years that they bet the entire cost of the roof on it. No insurance company of a roofing manufacturer would insure them if 99% of their shingles didn't outlast their warranty significantly.

We always mention these things to the homeowner and ask for the age of the roof and if there are or have ever been any leaks or blow offs. It is great personal research that is excellent for you and your company. You will be able to learn so much about the life span of each and every roof you do.

It is also very important to encourage homeowners who do need roof replacement to do so. Honest business practices are hard to come buy this day and age but are highly respected.

I second the Honest Business Practices! We've even had customers ask questions that they already know the answer to just to see what we'd say. There are too many fly-by-night guys out there that are good salesman and will tell a customer anything.
