I have gotten in the habit of taking pics of any damage I see before I clean so I have some proof. Well today it sure payed off. I had a lady call me mad and telling me I killed her plants. I went over with camera in hand and as she walked me around the house pointing out dead shrubs I showed her the pics of each dead shrub and some damage on the gutter that I took while giving the estimate. The pics had the date right on them. She said that she was sorry for wasting my time and that she was going to kill her husband for not watering her plants.
I've only been clenaing roofs for about one week, but I already ran into a similar situation with some peeling paint on a commercial guy's trim. I felt awful because I thought that I was responsible until I looked at the before pics.

That is a good habit to get into. If I find any damage I show the owner right then, take a pic. of it and make a note on the estimate.

Need to add a camera on to the supply list I see, I am sure there are many of those, looking for a free replacement.

It really isn't so mush that they want free replacement. Most folks do not pay ANY attention to the exterior of thier home. It is after you have cleaned that they actually start to look at stuff and then discover all these imperfections. We always point out and take pics of problems before washing.

Excellent idea Dejay. I take tons of pics for before and after purposes, but have not taken any of landscape etc for CYA purposes. This will become a standard process for me going forward. Thanks!
We take a ton of pics as well. Some customers are not aware their chimney and/or ridge vent have damage. We consider it part of normal business to inform our customers of this and we send them the pictures later. We love well informed customers!
DeJay told me about this the other day, and I found myself doing it not two days later on a large stucco house we did. Sometimes I look at plants after we did the roof and wonder if they looked like that when we started. On most houses some plants are damaged from disease or malnutrition before we get there.

This is half the reason I don't just leave a quote. I like to walk around and point out any damage that I see. I've never taken pics but will now just for extra proof. Good post

Absolutley....I haven' t even read the rest of the posts in the thread, but this is the SECOND best use of the digital camera...CYA... cover your assets! I always take lots of pics of damage/potential claims that may occur, especially at this time of the year when annuals are dying from the heat!!!!!
Homeowners will try and blame you for damage you did NOT cause! Pictures are your best line of defense against some claims such as this. Remember, digital "film" is cheap...nothing wrong in over documenting your jobs!!!
I've posted a few examples from my photo library!!!!!! When in doubt, document, document, document!
BTW...just before I hear the smart a$$ed comments...this is damage that I found before I ever began my work...not damage I caused!!!!!!!and yes, pics such as this kept me from having spend real $$$$ replacing flowers.
I like the time/date stamp idea, i really should turn that feature on, if I could get my 14 year old to show me how!!!!
