If you truly need to drum up work quickly, it must indicate you have some spare time. For about the same cost of 2-3 YP monthly payments, you can call Keith @KBK Graphics & get a pro flyer or door hanger made up. Get 5-10k flyers and get out there and create your buzz, do it like your running for Senate. Thats alot of flyers. I created a slide show on an Ipad that looks dam good, if I do say so myself. When I show people my digital show, I wait for the pause, wipe the drool from their bottom lip, then schedule the job.
I just discontinued my Yellow Book ad after having it for the last five years. I'll use that money to advertise online. I rarely get any calls from it anymore.
I had an YP online salesmen tell me, with a straight face, that they purchased the yp.com domain for some crazy figure in the tens of millions. My problem with online directories is if you Google a roof cleaning keyword you'll get a handful of actual businesses, then a few directories like yp.com or let's say Service Magic. So your first hurdle is having someone bypass the companies and go for the directory. Once there in the directory you battle the next round of odds of being chosen above anyone else. With all this said and if I'm somewhat correct, you don't stand a reasonable chance of a good return. As far as the book, they've become as irrelevant as the Hagstrom map.
Damm it wish you posted this one a few weeks ago. I went into one book now the other one is after me. My whole reason for going in the phone book was to get commercial jobs.

Yellow Pages = Valuable tool IF used correctly. 1/4 page ads are a waste of money. YP online is useless. That is what google is for.
Yellow pages ads should be boxed, with your name, because people like to feel like they know the person they're calling, phone number, website, and call-to-action. THIS is the secret: GET THEM OUT OF THE BOOK!
Ex: Visit our website for a $25 off coupon! Anything that gets them out of the book and into your website or sales arena will work.
I feel its a waste of capital, but I also feel that I've got to do something to help me establish more of an institutional presence for a couple of years. Here's what my rep has designed for me. Would love your comments.
An I'm not just focuing on Roof cleaning on this ad...I just don't think tallahassee is large enough for me to specialize in just that field at this point.
BTW...did tell my rep i wanted the certified RCIA logo in there too!

In our experience, the Internet works the best. Other close 2nds include referrals, flyer's (door to door), and last on the list are the yellow pages (which is more of an elderly reference source). If there are many retired home owners in the area, than you may have more success. With that said, the more exposure your company name has the better. If you have the money, give it a try. Just because a method doesn't work for Joe in California, or myself here in NY, doesn't mean it won't work for you. Worst case scenario, it is a tax write off and a learning experience. Good Luck....

This is absolutely right. I did away with the large ads. They are a total waste of money. A small boxed ad allows a customer to find you if they are looking for your company's name, but the call to action gets them out of the book, and on to your website. Once the book is closed, most likely they won't reopen it.
