Why when we see a heavily streaked roof, there are usually numerous areas that are directly below a vent pipe, or a dormer perhaps that are completely UN-STREAKED???
Like in the attached pic, you can see the typical thing I'm talking about, where the roof is clean directly below the vent pipes? It does not seem logical that an airborne organism avoids that particular location.... so can anyone explain?
It is the Zinc in the galvanized metal that leeches out, creating a fungicide that stops growth right below it, and also the vent pipe prevents water from running right below it. Water runs around the vent pipe, so the area right below stays a little bit drier then the rest of the roof.
Its the same idea as putting zinc or copper strips on the roof line. Only problem is that they dont work that well.
As you can see if the picture below on the before shot only the very top, maybe 1 or 2 feet is clean. Thats because of the mansard style roof and metal flashing rim on top.

That is awesome! Im guessing you used a lift? Any during pics.
Roger's pictures of the zinc strips in place (and not working) are priceless! I've been asked twice in the last month (the second time was just this evening) about 'preventative measures', zinc strips etc.
Rather than dismissing them as not effective (which appears to be a biased response due to our profession), I now have factual photos to show the informed customers.
Thanks again Roger for allowing me permission (via PM) to use them in my portfolio. I can't say thanks enough!
And the most common area is always the north side. Hence the evryday million dollar roof cleaner phrase "Northern Exposure".
