Just started doing this the other day, we were about to have a short but heavy rain right after a few roof cleanings in the retirement community we were in. We always bag the gutters to catch the run off, I think it makes life easier, well before we left and it rained, we flushed the gutters out. This cleared all the solution out so when it rained it was not flushed into the yards. This retirement community is super picky about the flowers and grass so this was just another precaution. Most vetern roof cleaners know how to properly dilute everything to insure nothing dies, so this little trick is kind of for the newbies who don't want to take any chances when starting out. Also for later in the day roof cleanings when the sun is going down and you may have a heavy dew in the moring with some still potent solution on the roof or in the gutters.

The thing to use is 42 gallon contractor heavy duty 3mm thick trash bags. These bags are the thickest and most durable that you can pick up at your local Lowes or HD. Other bags that are 3mm thick but not contractor grade have a tendencies to bust the bottoms out when there is more than 3 or 4 gallons of solution in them. Use pull tight bungy cords, pull the bag through then slip it over the end of the downspout, and pull tight. Then when you're done put your heavy duty trash bags in 5gal buckets to transport.

OK yall Im gona give up the goods again and drop a bomb! Its good for the industry so it needs to be shared.
This is a gutter cane and is used to attach at the end of a hose and hang from a gutter. There are three ways we used it.
1. Rinse the gutters after the job.
2. Hang from the gutter and let the water free flow out the downspout diluting the roof chem till its not an issue.
3. Hang from the gutter, plug all the downspouts with wads of plastic, then turn on the water. The wter would then fill the gutters and flow over the edge of the gutters. That would dilute any and all chem as well as rinse the plants at the same time.
These are aluminum and 40" long. Threaded at the end so you can attach a quick disconect or alike. They have a piece of clear braid hose covering the bend so that the alum wont leave black streaks on the gutters.
I sell them and will have many at the South Carolina NCE event the end of Sept. However if you need one now they are $50.00 shipped! A bit pricie but you wont have to buy one ever again unless its lost or stolen.
Thanks,
AC

That's a great idea AC. Overflowing the gutters would almost eliminate the ground guy rinsing the gutters so they don't stain. Is filling the gutters all the way up with water ok on the gutters, seems like that would be a lot of weight in them. I'm not able to make it to SC, so might have to order one from you. I'll be at the Columbus in October, you?

So with the gutter cane, you're not bagging, is that correct?
Is anyone really plugging downspouts like that!? It seems the overflowing trough would spill over at the low point, but not evenly from end to end. Therefore, the ground guy still needs to rinse them thoroughly and quickly.
Depends on whats in the immediate area. Grass only, just flood the area and no bags. Landscape plants, bag and flood area. Empty bags into 5 gal bucket and clean the drive with it.
I still bag gutters, gives more time to the ground guy to make sure the landscaping is plenty watered. Why take the chance of solution getting into the ground, grass, or landscape. Usually wait til the end of the week and take it all to the waste water treatment facility. You can even reuse it if it's within a couple of hours, the solution is pretty dirty so make sure you have a good filter and probably clean the tank afterwards. Or use it as weed killer. lol.

Learned my lesson the hard way on that one... flush them all now. By the way, another way to transport a heavy bag. I use one of my tarps. Just lay it on the tarp and drag it to the drain.

I've seen a lot of gutters full of solid ice in the middle of winter and still hanging without problem. If installed correctly, their should be no problem with the extra weight. Make sure you look at how well they are fastened before you start.
