Looks like I won't be cleaning roofs around here anytime soon.....
These is what homeowners are going to use, including me:
Landmark shingles’ warranty covers damage as a result of winds from 70 to 110 mph, depending on the shingle. The wind warranty is available for five years on most Landmark shingles, and 10 years on the TL series.
Landmark TL shingles are guaranteed against algae growth (though not mold or mildew growth) for 15 years. If the shingles are affected by algae growth, CertainTeed may request that the shingles be cleaned instead of replaced
Sound like you need to contact the installers in the area and get the cleaning contract. I'd be willing to bet a fat boy that those shingles will still grow algae and in less than 15 years. Even with zinc or coppers strips at the ridge line I've seen SOME algae growth.

Hey...don't worry they grow algae good too... the big difference is that the shingle mfg. will be paying you to clean them instead of the home owner! we've done a few of these jobs already and some others on this site have done plenty!!!
Yep, you can read the warranties on a lot of the shingle mfg. websites..
Most will pay for cleaning if the shingle is Algae Resistant. Owens Corning - which seems to be the shingle of choice in this area - offers a prorated amount of the cost of cleaning if the roof was installed over 12 months ago. If the shingle develops algae within a year, they'll cover the full price of cleaning.
Find out what the warranty is and keep it in the truck with you. The fact is, AR shingles can still develop algae discoloration.
I'll tell you what there aint a zinc strip or copper ridge cap in town that is going to stop a high rafter from growing anything. Take a look at a huge church that has black stains on it. They are evenly spaced at whatever the framing schedule is. When you have two temperatures far enough apart you have condensation on the above surface thats just simple laws of nature. And a high one wont get water that has petina oxidation runnoff to kill anything. And by the way if a lawn fertilizer guy using the right, or wrong stuff, ever sprays a pile of your zinc stips you will have an explosion, for real.
Good thing for us that Gloeocapsa magma is not algae. Certainteed landmarks are awesome shingles by the way, they even have lifetime ratings.
No matter what I think shingle manufacturers make too much money off what they do to put out a shingle that would stop them from selling shingles.

How would we go abouts getting the contracts with the manufacturers? Creative ideas are are greatly appreciated.
Actually I was thinking the installers.
Customers are going to contact the installers first when there "never grow algae" shingles start growing algae. Get in with these guys and have them refer you on every call.
Contact the manufacturer directly. Tell them you would like to be on their directory for roof cleaners or bwetter yet ask them for an exclusive contract for your area.

Looks like the man knows his photoautotrophicbacteria when he see it.

My apologies for taking the topic off track a bit, but wherever I see sales promises like this I see opportunity.
Doing business in the north west, I've come across a variety of gimmicks and types of roofs that state "you will never worry about moss and algae again". There all just sales pitches. Those of us that are in the dailey battle of solving this problem for our customers know that when conditions for moss and algae are present it will grow again and again. Regular maintenance and cleanings these people buying the products will find soon enough that there's no escaping it and those extra dollars spent on a gimmick product was wasted. so my point would be don't worry about it, they will be calling soon enough.
glad you like my pics micah, I've discovered picaso and have been playing with my new camera alot lately. Would like to see what your doing with yours.
That is why they give a warranty and not a gurantee. They won't gurantee that the mold won't grow, they will warranty (pay) the roof if it grows. Either way we get paid.

Great point, does GAF, CertianTeed and others have a vendor type list?
I do understand talking with the installers, but around here many are Mexicans and I don't believe many would contact a roof cleaner when they could fight to get the homeowner a new roof....just my 02
If you go to the manufactors web site and sift through the warranty it self , you will find that the are very specific as to the algae type. All I have read, warranty ONLY BLUE/GREEN Algae Here is the link for one major manufactor GAF.
