well after handing out 400 or so door hangers, going to all real estate offices, insurance offices, local hardware stores, and just flat out Big pimping it, I am using my cash I made on my first ten or so roofs to reinvest. Putting an add in the paper, an ad in the local, Eagles club paper, and even one in the flier that sits on the tables at the local restaurants. I am then going to start going right back to all the places I just mentioned and do it all over again. I also sent emails and pictures to about twenty or so real estate agents in town, and even rental property services. Any other places anyone think I should stop at.

Sweet....good work, get your name out there are it will happen! don't just do it once keep doing it every month or so. They need to see you 3 or more times before it kicks is. good luck man!
I agree with that, got to keep letting potential customers see me out there. I want to get my license in Oregon next month and start working on that side of the coast also. I will only do that if I am ready though. I really am amazed at the potential for a great business on the Washington Oregon coast, I mean no one is doing roof cleaning the RCIA way.
I made a flyer at kinkos with a before and after pic. made 3 fit on 1 page(glossy photo papper) and printed 60 flyers for about $30. Dropped them off at chosen houses and out of 30 i have dropped off i got about 12 calls and 10 demos. Out of 10 demos i have only done 3 roofs but i have 2 more for the weekend. Lil investment, went door to door, and i will drop off about 10 more on fri night. yes i drop them off at night. when they wake up they see the flyer, then the seed has been planted. on sun i do a follow up visit..... just started doing roofs too. The calls have been coming in. good luck might want to target a specific are instead. my.02

I hope this works for you. In my area first time ads do not bring much of a response. After about 5 or 6 times of seeing your ad people here start to believe that you are not a fly by night roof cleaner and begin to call. When they see you advertising in multiple places they really begin to call.
The following takes time but it keeps you from throwing you money away. Ask every customer how they found you and keep a spread sheet of the data. This will tell you which ad is working and which is not. Allow you weed out bad advertisers and not let personal bonds with the advertiser cloud your judgement. Business i business.
The newspaper is a good idea, but it takes time and it takes hitting these people with different ads several times.
For fliers, consider buying a decent color laser printer. They're not as expensive as you might think. I bought a Brother 4040cn from office depot for right around 250.00 - it was on sale. It comes with a full set of toner, which is worth the 250 alone. With this you can print around 1500 pages of full color pictures. I buy the glossy flier paper - it's around 15 dollars for 150 sheets.
If you do it this way, you can play around and track which fliers work best. You can change offers on them as well to suit each neighborhood.
I think it depends where you are... in areas where roof washing is new, print ads and postcards can be very enlightening and informative, and will be read... but in areas of the country where it is common, I think one needs to be more focused and hit the target more in the center.
I took a net 50k a year biz to 300k year after year biz by learning to change with the markets knowledge of an industry. The fun is always in the teaching.

Teach us Jason. Teach us how to take a 50K a year biz to 300K with in a year.
You will be a hero, I'm all ears, you have my undivided attention.
Regardless of the business, the key to success involves years of marketing yourself and your company which will result in a name that the public recognizes. The second key is being good at what you do. This involves having the knowledge and skills which will result in a job that meets the expectations of your clients. By doing a good job, the referrals will come and your reputation will grow. Jason has definitely put his time in to get where he is today. Marketing can be trial and error contingent on the economy, the competition, and the needs of your services. What works in one area or period of time may not work in another. Educating your clients on why they need you over the competition is beneficial. Without slamming the competition, just show them why you are good at what you do and how you do it. Do a good job and over time, the work will come.
#1 I thought you were the one with the instructor label on his lapel ! I am here to learn from you!!
My comments with regards to teaching were in reference to teaching the public what you have and perhaps what they want.
#2 I did not say "within" a year, though its not far off reality.
#3 The heros are in the Military or the operating room.
That said, I guess I understand your cynicism, the statement was written late at night, and while truth, appears arrogant, and was not meant to be that way.
If your truely interested, feel free to PM me. Bottom line is I get my joys and toys from buidling small businesses.
In an area where there was one roof cleaner in 2009 and 4 in 2010, all it can do is help me. The competition is almost like feet on the street for me. Sure they land jobs and take work, but I see each job they do well as one more notch in the industry belt because the idea is so new here.
If only one store sold silly bands, then maybe it wouldnt be such a fad, but since they can be had at Walgreens, the gas staion and K-Mart, there was enough of a spark to start a fire.
If you don't know what a silly band is, well, ......
And on a side note, I am sorry to hi-jack the thread. My opinion on the newspaper is, if your not going to be there consistantly, dont bother. If you can afford to be there consistantly, then you will see the real benefits.

My opinion on the newspaper is, if your not going to be there consistantly, dont bother. If you can afford to be there consistantly, then you will see the real benefits. Instructors are like guides but it takes everyones opinion to make this forum happen. You should not just be a taker but you should also share relevant info. That is how everyone learns.
Like Walk, I am interested in your tactics for expanding your business. Start a new thread on increasing your business from 50K to 300. I do not take what you said as being arrogant unless you hoard the info to yourself. It is your turn to shine, forget the behind the scenes PMing. We are here to learn.
It does not matter what the avenue is that you decide to advertise in. Like you said, what matters is that you do so consistantly. Some advertising avenues work better than others and only time will tell. I give an advertiser 2 years to make the cut. If ROI performance is below par in comparison to other advertisers, then they are cut. Advertising avenues are different in different parts of the country. For instance, in my area phone books are out and the internet is in.

Thanks for the reply Katy. We are definately on the same page. I am here to learn and share. You will see that over time and once I have a better handle on exatly what I am doing here, whats valuable, and what would just be a re-post. Still reading.
I'll start a poll question that the OP (origional poster of this thread) will find useful, along with myself and perhaps others. I'll title it "referral sources".
