A/C unit stain on asphalt shingle
Permalink

I have noticed for a while now the slight " white grease " looking small stain left behind from the A/C unit. The a/c usually runs into the gutter or out a small pipe onto the roof. Usually it so small the customer can live with it. I Just looked at a job today, the stain is so large its incredable. Anyone ever come up against this problem? What removed it? Thanks.

No it's not lint, its drains out of the A/C pipe usually from the second floor.I have only seen it about five times, usually you don't notice it.

I do know what that may be. Normally the condensate that comes from the A/C unit is somewhat distilled and clear If there is something in the air the air going into the unit will condensate on the coils then will run out through the drain. Some Hair salons Have a/c units with oily coils due to the chemicals

I would guess that is a calcium build up. I have seen it in humidifiers. Normally you replace the filter in the humidifier. I don't know what will remove it but it might be a place to start.

Yes Pat, that is correct.  It is most likely calcium build up.

I use a mixture of 85% phosphoric acid and a little muratic acid.

Cut it down with a little water and apply with a pump sprayer for roofs (make sure there is no bleach on the roof, do NOT mix bleach and acids together)

For vinyl siding I use PH straight with a little muratic in a bucket and apply with a brush.

Usually comes right out.

It could be a spot where someone else tried to clean it with ox and left it on too long, bleaching the shingles.

If you can't figure out how to get the stain out, you need to think out side the box, like patching it in with new shingles? the same color of course.

I think I will try Mike's mix first,I dont want to start replacing shingles. If I don't think a cleaning will benefit the home owner I tell them to contact a roofer. I did that twice this year already...one had so much granuel loss it was amazing the other roof was also shot.Once you start replacing shingles you own it,problems in that area can be on going like leaks, and for the little money it ain't worth the headache. I say step aside and let a roofer handle it...just my thoughts.

When and if I run into it I will figure it out. All we have here are heat pumps and they are on the ground. No need to waste time investigating if I don't have any to clean. From the description it just sounded like calcium to me.

Good luck with that Pat, I'm sure that Mike's solution will work for you.
