To be fair guys every market is different. He may be driving around tract neighborhoods where the houses are 1000sqft, then $300 doesn't sound so bad when you can finish it in under an hour with 15-20 gallons of mix. If hes talking about a 3k sqft home with a 2 car garage, then theres an issue.
soapy roof that scheme of yours is what we refer to as a "gypsy scheme" con men roaming the country ripping people off, common schemes are, we have some bitumen left over from a job down the road and we can fix your drive way pot holes for you cheap, or, we have roof paint left over from a big job and can paint your roof for a cheap price etc. of course they all do a rubbish job and rip the people off, they end up asking for 3 times the price thay first said then harras and stand over you till you pay, old lady's are there favourite pray. do not do this type of selling!!!!!!! it is the mark of a con man
Yeah we start at $350 on small ranchers, we have some real low ballers all over the state here too. I had a roof for $750 recently that was undersold by a guy with a pressure washer. He bid the 2500sq. roof, 400sq+rails deck a deck reseal and house wash for $600... so I tried real hard but the customer didn't care. Wonder if they ever had the job finished?? These are the kind of guys that start a job, realize they are going to be there all week for $600 and just leave without finishing or collecting any money. Or the kind that pour water seal on your deck while it's still wet. I put them in a folder to call next year when it grows back, Maybe I can refer them to a deck builder as well :)

$750 for 2500 sq.ft roof or were you bidding the other areas also?

Andy, I'm sure that is for the roof only. Bill and I are relatively close and I routinely get that kind of rate. The competition around here uses the roof rover and is getting more than double that rate.
The biggest problem Bill and I have is convincing the new guys not to underbid the jobs just so they get work. They sell scared. They do jobs for $.15/sqft that they could have easily gotten $.30/sqft.

Gotcha, If you can get that price you can make a nice profit. I'm @.15 & up. But I have not cleaned a roof in a month and a half. People are not calling.
I think that the pricing of roof jobs is a very important part of the process. I do not think that lowering your pricing per sq. ft. is good for the business. I think that instead give a discount on the job like a May or June discount is better. If you need the work and have to low ball a few to survive, you can then jump back up when business picks up to a price that you can live with. If the competition is low balling then something is usually compromised.
