I was house washing yesterday and the customer asked what products are used to clean the roof. I was kind of stumped, because I didnt want to scare her with the harsh product names. What have you guys come up with to ease the customers mind.
With SHC I always tell the client that this is a cleaning solution that not only cleans but kills the algae growing into the roof.
Usually that keeps them at bay.
Their next question will be, "Will it kill my plants?" I say, " We will not kill your plants because we pre water and cover all of your plant life so that will not happen.
Usually does the trick. Not a chemical but a cleaning solution.....
I just tell them what it is and how it works, usually. Sometimes I just tell them it is a biodegradable algae killing solution. I find if you don't tell them what it is your competitor will and then you look like a fool, or vise versa. Whatever you do don't lie to them. I win bids all the time were someone lied or tried to hide the truth. Instant win for us since we just tell them the whole story.
Sometimes I say that it is a proprietary cleaning solution that has some chlorine in it because they will smell the chlorine, I will not try to lie to them or hide that as it can/might come out later on in conversations and like they said, you don't want to look like a fool.
It is a cleaning solution that has different components to kill the fungus and help keep it off the roof for a year or longer.

Never use bleach, or chlorine. Everyone knows thats what it is, but it just sounds bad.
VERY good answer Scott, sodium hypochlorite and tri sodium phosphate with a single chain biodegradeable surfactant works for some too
Never bleach, NEVER
Thanks Chris, i got that from YOU
Though we dont ALWAYS agree, I am proud of what you and your wife have accomplished Scott. You have built a very successful roof cleaning company in Houston, taking what you have learned from me and others, and adding your own beliefs and personality to it. Every time I see all those impressive before and after roof cleaning pics of yours, I light up with pride. It is good to see both you and fellow Texan Chris from Corpus Christi posting here on RCIA again. Both of you are now veteran roof cleaners, and thank you for sharing your considerable experience with our newcomers. Us roof cleaners don't always have to agree, LOL Mike Sullivan, my very good friend, uses the Delavan Fat Boy Pump, it's all good. There is room here for different opinions, and it is good they be presented, though at times I personally dont always agree with them. It is just like back when you were making your flyer's headline. Everyone presented their opinion, and you went with what headline made sense for YOU. As long as we can agree to sometimes disagree, w/o being disagreeable, all is good. Really, IMHO, all that matters is we are all roof cleaners at the end of the day, and I will drink a beer, and swap war stories with any roof cleaner, regardless of his pump type, or roof cleaning hose diameter.
I just say it's an ancient chinese secret. Remember that commercial? That usually makes them laugh and we move onto scheduling. It's a good question and it should be asked by a customer, along with a ton of other important questions. It baffles me how people hire me to do work on their biggest investment with very minimal questions. I usually get asked how much? Will it hurt my plants? When can you start? But then again, I've been told I could sell ice cubes to eskimos. Still not sure if that was a compliment. : )
Givem the ole Smile "If I tell U I'd have to kill you" I told a guy yesterday that I had to pay big bucks to get it formulated to work in south texas and wasnt going to tell anyone. He would have to pay a chemist to formulate a solution to work down here. But he is the owner of "Homie The Handy Man" I knew he was just trying to see what i used to add that on to his bizz. but i didnt know thats what he did for a living. I still got my $600 bucks and cleaned his driveway for free. He was a good guy but im sure ill be seeing him around. very soon

I rarely even get asked about what I'm using. Most people just want a good end result,...and however it's achieved is fine by them,Ha,Ha. Making them feel naive is worse than telling them the truth. The smell of bleach makes all those well thought answers sound like a bunch of bunk. What's wrong with the truth,...I can buy tools but that doesn't make me a mechanic,...as with most home owners can buy the products but can't clean a roof,...and most realize that..
When someone does ask though I have the perfect answer that always makes them smile.
My answer is short and to the point; "Roof Cleaner" Then I proceed to tell them everything that's in it,...and they couldn't care less,...they're just curious and actually do have a right to know,...considering it's their property and they are employing you. So I tell them.
I've been asked before what is it I use on roofs. What did I say? "You my competition?" LOL! or A "special" Roof mix. If I told you Id have to kill you. I try to make light of what I use. Hey it works! No damage to plant life. Or anything. If asked further I always say sodium hypochlorite is one of the ingredients, plus a penatrant and a surficant and water!
