I see everyone moving away from TSP, are we still using borax?
Every one has their favorite roof cleaning mix, and some still use Borax. It is compatable with Chlorine, although like TSP a bit hard to mix, compared to the Ammonyx LO Surfactant.
So does Borax have any cleaning properties at all or is it just used to thicken up the mix? I am a little confused on the purpose of borax. I believe I read on another post that someone say borax was used to keep the roof cleaner longer. So is it a thickener, cleaner, and preserver?

It is a chlorine compatable cleaner and algae preventer, really designed for use with TSP in Apple Sauce.
And just to clarify--Alcohol can also be added to the apple sauce to give it even more cleaning power and Amonyx Lo is added to thicken. Thanks to everyone -- this forum has the largest grouping of true professionals I have ever seen.

Yes, and yes, but only add rubbing alcohol just before use, if left overnight in your mix, it weakens it!
The TSP helps the borax stick, the ammonyx rinses away cleaner, so less borax will be left on the roof. But TSP is an EPA marked hazard to life in fresh water so, environmentally friendly or longer lasting roof ?? We have cut our tsp usage and use the borax in our treatment solution mainly. In wooded areas we still add borax and tsp as the algae is more hardy there.
Where do you buy your Borax? I think Walmart sells it but is it better to buy it from a chemical supplier. Or is the amount that we use not really call for it?

I need a little clarification here. I thought that the ammonyx purpose was to help thicken the mix and cause it to stick to the roof? But according to your post the ammonyx has another purpose to "rinse away cleaner".
