Need advice for residential job- stream
Permalink

I have a job I just priced out where a guy lives next to and in front of a stream, his gutters go underground and release into the creek. He would be cool with me bagging the gutters but he is concerned about the residual effects and wants to know if it is going to be bad for the stream short and long term. What advice can I give him?

He refuses to have any phosphates and isn't happy about the SH, I would tell him tough chit but this is a huge home with an enormous garage and a pretty easy gig for a rookie like myself.
I am not looking for a no SH solution to this issue because I know it doesn't exist,
I'm just looking for expert advice to explain to the customer. In other words what would you guys say.

I would tell him that I will make sure the gutters are clean so that the cleaners will move freely out and into the baged down spouts and that everything will be perfectly fine and begin cleaning.

Well, if there's no Phosphates and no Chlorine allowed, I'm kind of scratching my head as to what you would use. I guess sodium hydroxide, but I don't like that stuff!!!!!

I always tell my customers one of the reasons we don't rinse the roof is to leave the SH on the roof and let the sun/time help neutralize it.

Can you plan the job accordingly to have 5 or 6 days of dry time?

Depending o the size of the stream, I'd be surprised if the SH from a single roof would have diddly-squat effect on it.

Also, if using the amonyx lo, you be amazed at how little runoff you actually have!

I did just buy some of the Ammonyx Lo from Lori and I will be using it. It's just that some customers really want to know everything and I guess I don't have all of the answers yet.
I think it should be fine, after all we are using the same stuff they use in a water treatment plant.(SH)
The problem here though is I am not sure what the runoff overtime will do to the stream and I was wondering if anyone had any tech info on that. Ofcourse I can get buy without the TSP but to clean it right I also want to use the SH. I mean people dump their pools out into the street around here during the fall, if that is legal then one would assume this is ok as well. I just don't want to be responsible for three eyed fish, especially being an avid fisherman myself.

if you don't feel comfortable doing the job simply move on to the next one! You dont have to do every job that comes your way.

if I was to sense that someone was going to give me a difficult time I would move on! you told the guy that you would bag the gutters what else does he want from you? by bagging the gutters, I feel that showed your professionalism.

Yeah its not worth it, the customer is a PITA, so I will give him the, "do it or not" option. It is up to them to do their research and decide whether it is right for them. I can only provide so much info to the customer.

We recently did a few where the fall out would of been the local lake, the homeowner's did not question me and I was careful to catch all of the SH. If you have any doubts about the homeowner or the community then you need to forget about it and move on, it's not worth it. The red X marks the spot of the house.

Not sure if my input is worth anything being im a new guy at this but here goes... A good friend of mine also works for a water treatment plant and they use Azone 15 which from my understanding is a fancy name for chlorine. They clean there tanks , water towers and waste water facilities with it . So if your state and local water management company's are using it in our drinking water and water towers then I think the run off from his roof will be so diluted after a minute or so if it get's in the stream that nothing should get harmed. Also if the gutters run right into the stream could you run an extra hose into the gutters while cleaning the roof ? That would or should work. just a thought .

I just did a house this weekend that had 2 pipes coming into their lake. I put a rock into the buckets and they filled up about half way. The H/O had various species of fish stocked and was very concerned about the runoff. Luckily the lake was fairly large so we were not all that concerned.

She told me that she had stocked some fish that were "algae eaters." I told her that she should have stocked them on her roof!

You are going to have customers that are concerned about a lot of things and then you will have customers that are just a royal pita, it is just easier to walk from those pita customers because it is not worth the aggravation, possible arguing and possible not paying you for silly and stupid reasons.

I have to keep reminding myself to just walk when I deal with those pita customers. I dealt with a few of them over the years and always regretted it for a long time.

Like the other guy said, you don't have to take that job or any that come along, pick the jobs you want to take and do a great job for them.
