Chlorine is only 10% shc and a gallon only contains 10% pure shc and the rest is water. If you buy SHC from a source like univar you get 12.5% percent pure SHC.
I buy my chlorine from both Ace & Pinch-A-Penny. Using 10% chlorine is not a problem. You just add more to get the final ratio of chemical to water. I've cleaned some roofs that were completly covered with algae. Black as night. In fact one customer had a roof repair done and they used a very dark shingle color. Once I cleaned the roof he had a dark spot where the repair had been done. The rest of the roof was a nice blue/gray color.
You just need to make sure that Ace and Pinch-A-Penny are selling you fresh chlorine. I watch the tanks where I buy and I talk to the managers. They get fresh SH each week. There are a lot of pools here in Florida so they sell a lot of chlorine.
Pool Chlorine is what I've used for the past 10 years in this business, and its always done me right. In fact its only been since I opened my own company last year that I've even started playing with additives to the mix. (my old boss was really cheap, just soap and SH).
This forum (and others) are just a great example of how education can help you earn more $$$$. Learning about F-13 has provided me a niche that few others in my area can do.
I'm just trying to learn the terminology here, and also trying to see if there's a better way of doing things!

Not a problem with the fresh stuff here, PAP gets 4000 gallons in weekly right now, and will boost up to 8000 during heat of the summer. Leslie's is the same way.
I'm a little suspect of ACE as far as freshness goes.

I bought some pool shock the other day and it didn't seem to work as good as my 12.5 % I buy from Univar. The pool shock ingredients said 10% shc and 90% inert ingredients. So I am assuming water. So is the 12.5% shc we get 87.5% water? Now you guys have me confused. I just know my 12.5% seems to work much better.
I would say that whether it's 10% or 12.5%....both will work great. The only problem you may have is that the pool chlorine (10%) might not be as fresh and may have sat on the shelf too long.
By the way, I can get the 12.5% from Univar but usually go with the 10% from RAM Chemical because I can buy it in the gallons, so I only buy what I need for each job. RAM supplies a large franchise pool supply company so it's fresh.
Just my two cents....
Lastly, whether it's 10% or 12.5% for both the rest is water.
I would say just make sure it's liquid, make sure it's fresh and make know the math. You can always make adjustments if your mix is too strong or too weak.
Pool shock is Calcium Hypoclorite which is easier on vegetation than SH. Make sure that you are getting fresh chemicals because like SH heat an the ultra violet sun rays decompose it.
