Shurflo Pump Issue: Please Help
Permalink

I was hoping maybe someone could help me understand why I'm not getting enough flow and pressure on a pump I just bought.  This is the first time I tried out my new equipment and am very disappointed.

3.3 GPM Shurflo 45-50 psi Max.
5/8" 200' hose
3/4" ball valve for nozzle with 3gpm nozzle tip.

Hooked it up today and to me it was not much better than a pump-up hand help sprayer.  It shoots about 15-20 feet (maybe) with the no angle nozzle tip but was like a very thin stream.

Let's just say there is no way I'm ever going to be able to spray a roof from the ladder.  To me, it's so bad, I can't see ever having to deal with run-off.

Oh by the way, I went with the 115 VAC pump and am able to plug into electrical socket so I don't have to deal with a marine battery.

If there is anyone that can tell me why this pump is barely able to get the job done or am I doing something wrong.  Any advice would help...thanks.

Rick

i dont know if the 3.3 gpm would be enough in a 200 foot hose plus the hose is elevated. i have only used 5gpm and up. what were you pulling from were you flooding the pump?

You may find that the 45-50 max psi will limit you on the distance you get with the pump.  It sounds like your biggest problem is the nozzle size.  Try using a 30 instead of a 3.

a bigger orifice is better with the pumps for roof cleaning if you use a pressure washer nozzle it will just give you a spray like a pump up.

I think 5/8 hose with a 3.3 is probably giving you too much back pressure. Also your using too big of a tip to expect getting a long range of distance. If you want to stick with the hose then try changing the Pump to one like a Delevan 5850 or a fat boy. If you call Lori you will find that the pumps are very reasonable and well worth purchasing. It should get you through until you decide to upgrade to an air pump system.

I am using a pressure washer nozzle tip.  I thought everyone was using that kind of tip?  I have a 2530 and a 0030.

I believe the 2530 means 25 degrees and 3 GPM and the 0030 is 0 degrees at 3 GPM.

The 0030 shoots a stream with no fan spray. I'm not sure if what I'm typing is going to make any sense to the readers...let's hope.

ps.  I do agree that a bigger nozzle tip could maybe do the trick...

OK, I was getting confused by the tip when you said 3gpm. Try using a 2540 or a 2550 and see what happens. The 0030 tip is doing what it is supposed to do. You can also try a 0020 for even more distance or a 0040 for distance and more flow.

I agree....Larry

The 0040 and/or the 0050 should get the job done much faster than the 0030.  I just need more flow.  I can deal with the pressure and distance...at least until a get a few roofs under my belt.  Then, most likely will upgrade to the Delevan Pump.

I hope I can get one with the 115 VAC option.  I like being able to plug into an outlet.

Here's an old thread.

Larry's right, we recommend 12V Delavans or air compressors with an air pump.

Do yourself a favor and spend the extra $30 for a 12V Delavan 5gpm 60psi pump.

They are twice as strong as the Shurflos, has almost twice the volume output, and you can shoot 30+ feet from your ladder.

You can use the same hose you have and the 0040, 1540 nozzles work best for the 5850 12V Delavan.

No comparison really.  One roof job pays for itself.

We use the fatboy set-Up and use 5/8 hose and we can shoot at least 30 feet with a 50 nozzle.

Went to the hardware store today and bought a male 3/4" NPT x 3/4" Garden Thread adapter.

Screwed one side into my 3/4" ball valve and then screwed on a $6 garden nozzle bought at Home Depot.

Worked like a champ. Measured out a steam of water at 40 feet. I'll play around with it more but I'm glad to know the pump will get the job done from the ladder / gutter. Thanks everyone again.

You are 1/2 correct.

The 25 is the degree fan pattern and the 30 is the size of the orifice (hole), not the gallons per minute.

Rick, I am glad you found a fix for now.
Yeah the 30 is not bad. And they are pressure washing tips for HUGE pressure washers. That pump is going to fry on you in no time. It will be overloaded with all that hose. When it does switch to the delevan and you will be much more satisfied. Make sure you rinse that pump after every job.
All electric pumps are throw away pumps for the simple fact they they are not made of A rated materials for SH. If you do a google search for sodium hypochlorite compatability you will find plenty of charts. The Air pumps last longer as you can buy them made of kynar.

Mike from Gutterdogs: Same deal, try the Delevans before the sure flows, they are almost the same price. If you can afford an air pump you will never look at an electric pump again. My 6gpm All flo cleans 3k sq ft of roof in 1-1.5 hrs.
