TV Commercial - Effective...or Not So Much?

I was thinking about running a commerical on my local WDIV, WXYZ, and HGTV. My question is, has anyone done this? If so, was it effective..worth the money? I do have ties with WXYZ, just thought I should ask for feedback before I took that step forward.

Thanks

Bob,

I have not run a tv commerical but I have a neighbor who has a landscaping business. He put a simple ad on tv telling people about his company and showing some before & after pictures. The cost of the ad was reasonable and his phone continued ringing as long as the ads were appearing on tv. He told me it was very successful.

Charles...thanks for the information. I figure that would be the case...there is just a lot of time and possible money involved I just wasn't sure in this economy if it was worth it.

Here is MY experience, FWIW.
In a GOOD Economy, advertise like hell, in Bad Economy, only do ads that are free.

If I was younger, and up in Michigan, here is what I would do.
I would have a "fleet" of small little Ford Ranger type trucks with 125 gallon tanks in them with 12 volt pumps.
These trucks are "free demonstration" ONLY trucks of comission salespeople out doing free demo's.
Pay them a very small salary/Gas + Comission.
Arm them with a really nice Company Brocure tohand out, but give them a Quota.
They MUST contact and demo so many a day.
Trust me, NO one I have ever met will say "No" once you leave a clean spot on their Roof roof cleaning

Gave me an idea....Going to make an UglyShingle.com stencil with my logo.

Clean within the stencil for the free demo......they'll have no choice but to clean the rest! ;)

Here's my opinion on TV ads. I would never disrespect Professor Chris's opinion, he has tons of experience, I have none so far. In the northern market areas, there isn't much awareness of roof stains, their causes, or what can be done about them. I know several people who have had a new roof installed just because of stains. They didn't know or even consider that they could be cleaned.

In the Tampa area, Chris has cleaned an amazing amount of roofs. There is an awareness that has been built there that isn't up here in the north. When I tell people about what I intend to do, no one has even heard of such a thing.

Any way that the public becomes aware of the facts is a good thing as far as I can see. I was a homeowner who sprayed some "spray and regret" crap on my roof that didn't work, that's how I got here on this forum. Most folks will just let it go. If you see an ad on TV or in your newspaper, or wherever, it gets you thinking, "maybe there is something I can do about it". I think that in your area, as well as mine, getting that word out would help you greatly, as well as the rest of us. Awareness is the key.

If you know there is no cure for your disease, why go to the doctor?

I dont want to hijack the thread, but i feel now is a good time to ask now that we are on the subject....What about radio advertising? They are cheap and go to a huge amount of people. Has anyone used tried this before? If so, what were the results?

I've done some radio advertisement with my construction company in the past and the results were mixed. Personally I don't think I would go there again..that's why I was thinking about going to tv.

It was hard to represent my company over the radio...I feel customers need to get a visual on my work in order to call me.

"Personal Opinion"

Thanks

We have run a 30 second spot in a major market. Run on the early morning news and the evening news when more people are home. Run heavy on the weekend, vey expensive but it is paying off. $3,800

I love the free demo idea!!!!!!!!! I think that this would work better than a tv spot cause you have actual face to face sales, which is the best advertising known to man.

If "Indiana Roof Cleaners" Danny and Mike ever get back on the forum, they can tell us a lot about this topic. They ran many ads on our local CBS affiliate here in Indianapolis before and during the NCAA tourney. I've watched many of the games but never saw the ad, although I've had people tell me they saw it before the games began.

I'd like to know what the response has been. How about an update, guys?
